Just how quickly can they come on?

Having had no sign of lameness, B has developed a whooper on the inside of her LF leg. She's ALWAYS had such clean legs - not even a windgall!! I wasn't there 2 weeks ago when I moved yards and I pick out their feet almost daily and I noticed it last night - it's SOLID and HUGE!!! Am really, really peed off!! I want to show her and the foal in-hand next year and I fear this will go against her

pretty suddenly it seems, I check my boys legs twice a day when I put on and take off his field boots, one night they were fine, the next morning he had another splint

My mares came up in a matter of days with no lameness at all - it wa the size of half a boiled egg stuck to her leg!

its has reduced considerably since then and although its noted in the show ring i dont find i get hugly marke down for it (that said i only show at a reasonably local level!)

Cheeko had a hot area on the inside of his cannon for about 6 weeks before a splint came up- did tell the owner about it but he insisted that he kept on being ridden. But there was definately noticeable heat there.
However Forrest developed a few splints in the time I had him and there was no warning at all...just popped up one day.
They should reduce with time.

They can come up overnight. Is there any heat in it? Does it hurt to palpate? If so, its still active and lots of icing should help. If not, magnets do help bring them down. Splintex might help - some people swear by it, but it did nothing at all for me. DMSO/cortisone might also help, but not if it is fully formed.

My horse threw two massive ones on the outside of both front legs last year. They appeared overnight and were never hot or sore. They are now almost completely invisible (even on the x-ray, which was interesting to see). However, he also got a big and troublesome one on the inside of his LF, which got fractured and needed surgery. So I'm totally paranoid about splints now.

I'm going to try splintex this winter, how long does it take before it's supposed to start working?

Also how long are they supposed to have off?

My Lacey came in with a soft one today (usually I find her with hard ones, she's soo bad on the ground, she gets them all the time in the field) so followed vets instructions and put like ice on her front legs, as well as hosing it off first for half an hour..Also have put her in a smaller field which I'm going to start hosing tomorrow to soften it a bit xD -is desprate- My vet said wait a few days - maximum a week before riding her again, or maybe that was for how long until it hardened and we could be sure it's a splint..I'm gonna put pads in her front shoes though maybe it'll help.
