my horse came in lame 3 days ago and i found a split about 3 inches horizontally along his coronet, doesnt look like an injury looks more like coronet has gone soft and split. vet came and thinks same that muddy conditions have softened it. ive been told box rest and keep covered, turnout if nice weather only.
my main worries are this horse has a bad back and spavins so needs turnout and riding to stop him getting stiff. hes quite fit right now and its taken me alot to get him there. also personally i think dry poulticing is just keeping wound soggy and tissue doesnt seem to be binding. ive turned out with bandage and duct tape which staye din place but was quite soggy underneath but in himself he was so much happier.
whats peoples experience? should i be dressing, box resting, turning out??? how long will it take to heal and will it make hoof grow split of mishapen? annax

I think you might find that this is actually an abscess exit wound, if it is very close to the top of his hoof. If so, the cut will not "heal", as such, but a line will grow down his hoof. Don't worry about it, he'll manage fine. Keep it infection/fungus free ( hydrogen peroxide 3% squirted in daily is a good idea) but turn him out and ride as normal if he is sound.

Hi annar, My horse had exactly the same as yours by the sounds of it a number of years ago came in from the field with a split along the coronet band about 2 inches long. He was fine though, I did not bandage the wound though as wanted to let the air get to it to dry it out and heal up which it did to quite quickly. Just need to make sure it is clean if left open - I used blue spray or equivalent daily and turned him out (the fields were a lot drier then tho) I would maybe leave him in if your fileds are as muddy as ours and just lead him around in hand to stratch his legs.
I wound not use peroxide on an open wound.

Hope it heels up soon.

Just to reassure you, hydrogen peroxide at 3% is fine, it's sold in Boots as a wound wash for open wounds on children and adults. It's about the cheapest flushing agent you can use and it's very effective.

My horse had a coronet band injury and the vet prescribed aluminium spray. It healed up completely except for a raised bit that grew down his hoof.

thanks all, just over a week later the bit of split coronet has fallen off and the tissue under seems hard and healed, ive done alternate days out according to weather conditions as fields boggy and have left wound uncovered but cleaned every day and sprayed with the invisible bandage spray, today ive just recieved aluspray so have used that tonight as hes staying out to keep a youngster company who needs 24hr turnout at mo. he was also sound today on his first hack out and even jumped a stepping post which hes never done before lol. annax
