I've just noticed that big lad has a split on his coronet band (the really soft bit where the hoof meets the leg); it's about 1.5 cm long (1/2'') but I can't tell how deep it is. If I squeeze at both ends of it, pushing it in on it's self, it opens up anout 1mm. There is no blood/ pus.
There is a little heat in the leg, but it's not what you would describe as hot, from a cut higher up on his cannon. The hoof was warm, but they all were as I'd just riddden.
It could have been there for a while, I'm fairly vigalent, but haven't washed his hooves for a few days, and as it's under the hair, I haven't spotted it before.
Has anyone else had this?
What shall I do to treat it?
Thanks in advance

i would def get vet advice as coronet injuries can be very serious. wen my horse had a cut on one of his coronet bands, i rang my vet (im a nurse at the practice so i am frequenly down the list of priorities if i need a non urgent call to my horse!), however, one of the vets told me that coronet band injuries can be very serious as the hoof growth comes from it so any damage to the band can have a knock on effect on hoof development. my horse's cuts were only superficial so i was told to bathe them with hibiscrub (salt water would be fine if you dont have any) and bandage them over with vetrap and i kept my horse in the stable overnight to give the tissue a chance to heal over to prevent dirt/infection getting in. hope that helps!

My boy had this last year. I had the vet out to check it and he said to wash it out with warm salty water twice a day and gave me a purple spray for it. He wasn't allowed to get it muddy, so he stayed in the yard for 2 weeks and I just hacked round the roads. I did let him out in the field for a bit after the first week, but I wrapped his foot in a sugar beet bag and stuck the top up with duck tape to attempt to keep it clean!

''Don't you just love a thoroughbred'' indeed! God knows I love mine, but accident prone doesn't even begin to describe it!! The vets no is on my speed dial they come out so often!

Because I don't know when he did it, and he's not lame, I'm going to keep it clean, and wait a couple of days before getting the vet out. Unless it is bad tomorrow, obviously.
The swelling has only just gone down from his cut cannon as well, I think he does it on purpose to get out of work
