My boy was in a car accident in March, trapped in a trailer, and amongst the other injuries, he had a very bad cut around the coronary band - from the front to back of the outside of the hoof. The new hoof is growing well. My problem is that the part of the hoof below the cut has now broken off. I read about a product called hoof putty and wondered if anyone has used this and if it would be any good for my boy to give him some support. Farrier can't put new shoe on till the hoof grows some more.

If you mean Keratex Hoof Putty, I'm not sure it would work in this instance. Its good for holes in the hoof - i.e between the shoe and the hoof or holes in the sole. Its more for filling holes, a bit like filling in cracks in the wall if that makes sense.

Poor horses!

Hoof putty (as in the Keratex stuff) won't do what you're wanting. It's basically a wax that doesn't set. It has little sturctural strength.

Maybe ask your farrier about glue on shoes, or acrylic filling.

Kallibear - that is exactly what I was trying to say!! I was thinking about how you have to warm it up and make it malleable but couldn't think how to describe it or because it was like that it doesn't stick to stuff very well if at all!!

I had a similar problem with my boy - he stepped on himself cutting his coronet band and when the hoof grew down there was a huge chunk missing. My farrier used some kind of filler, I think similar to the type described above, however I'm not sure it would work if there was no hoof at all to nail to as my farrier put two normal nails on the broken side and then nailed one into the filler.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

It is the wall of the hoof that has split off, the rest of the hook is fine. I spoke to the farrier the other week when he did the other feet about gluing a shoe on but he said that they don't stay on very long. Also thought about being one of those BOA Boots. Will try to speak to the vet this week. I don't think it will be long before the hoof grows enough to put a shoe on, but at the moment I'm not keen to ride him in case we do any damage.

Thanks again.
