My little jack russell has a real problem with split pads she keeps getting them and just as one gets better another one comes or it looks like a whole layer of skin has come off the pad, not v nice!

Any ways of preventing it and also of making it heal?

One of my labs was in the local park pond and a big chunk came off two pads. Probably glass it was so clean a cut. We cleaned it with salty water, dressed it with melonin, wrapped it with vetwrap and repeated that for about 5 days. Then when it started to dry up I put a non-poulticing dressing on. Put plastic bags on her when she had to go out to the garden to try to keep the wound dry, and its healed very well.

My Springer had a split pad earlier this year. It was bad and needed staples! It had to be bandaged and kept dry, but healed well after a few weeks. Like Bess, it was an injury from something sharp on a walk. If your dog keeps getting split pads, are you walking her in places with hazards like glass, cans or barbed wire? If you think she has soft pads, maybe you could do more walks on tarmac to toughen them up.

Thanks you 2.

She's a working terrier and spends a lot of time down holes, in fields but also walks out on the road when we ride. Her kennel also has a concrete run so i don't feel she's lacking time on hard ground to toughen them up if that makes sense. Also she's walked in our fields which wouldn't have anything sharp in no.

Its so odd it often just looks like the whole top layer of a pad has just come away more than a split but is obviously sore as she goes round on 3 legs, although sometimes will put it down so can't be that bad. Just really odd!!!
