my horse (just turned 7) has a large splint on a front leg. He had this at vetting, i havent had him long, and the vet was unconcerned and said it wasnt causing any probs and infact may go down in size as it was recently formed. It didnt cause any lameness while it was forming.

My question is this; i always boot up when I ride - but I am aware of not wanting to overheat my horse's legs and thus would avoid them being on when not necessary. However, he has since I have had him, knocked the splint hooning about the field. No major damage caused, just a surface wound. But ive heard of a horse breaking his splint bone doing the same and I wonder now if I should be turning out with brushing boots on the front?

We have same situation with our TB gelding. When he first arrived he was acting the maggot and knocked splint and cut other foreleg so he wore brushing boots for a while. Now settled he doesnt need to but yes I would get some turn out boots to protect the splint as this and the hard ground caused his to flare up.

Can I ask when he got the splint so how long had it and how long its been hard for if vt thinks may go down as would lve our boy's to but it doesnt seem to be reducing any although he isnt lame and its formed and vet says fine??

ive only had him just coming up 4 weeks.... according to his old owners it came up over the winter. It is pretty large, lol, no pics im afraid... but the vet did say it wasnt causing any probs and 'may well go down'

it says here also that they may reduce over time....
