Sponsorship based on the amount of likes you get?

I don't get it, why would a company sponsor someone on the amount of likes they get? This is regarding a FB group.

Surely if you were to sponsor someone you would go for someone proffesional, who turns out well, puts on a good face, rides well and gets results?

This is not coming from a failed applicant (haven't even entered) just genuinely don't understand the reasoning behind it.
 
If its to do with the ribbon somehing or other one someone commented on their page and they confirmed.that it is not just down to the number of likes, if not ignore me :-)
 
Using facebook as advertising, how many likes you get is indicative of how many people follow / respond to your posts and how effective your advertising would be. Never mind the fact that you might not wish to associated with some of what these people do ;)
