Last season, out with the local hunt on a damp day of worsening mist and in unfamiliar country, towards the end of the day my horse had become slightly lame and, having taken a detour to avoid a jump, I found I was separated from the field. I was not too concerned as I thought I knew where the hunt had gone - there were frequent indications. The strange thing was I had the distinct impression that, as we jogged along, I was being followed by another rider; but whenever I turned to look, no one was there.

Later, I put this down to my own state of mind, or perhaps an over-tight stock, but it has stuck in my mind as a lightly odd day. When I got home, I found one of the cats had died of a heart attack. Has anyone else had a strange, perhaps spooky, experience while out hunting?

Not out hunting but an odd one...

I arrived home one day and as I walked through the utility room, saw my long leather riding boots. For some reason, completely unbidden, a voice in my head said 'If that boot falls over, M is dead". The boot fell over. I stopped, shuddered and carried on, hackles up.

I walked into the kitchen to be told almost immediately, that the love of my life, my horse of a lifetime, M, had been suddenly taken ill and PTS that day.

It was the same just after I'd left home. Whenever my mother rang to let me know an animal had passed on, I knew before she told me. It wasn't that they were failing of old age either. Even when they had died suddenly, I knew.

From a young age, I had also envisaged being at my fathers premature funeral and again, it happened when he died traumatically.

I have no idea why this is and I hate to say it but given my experiences, I can't help but feel 'there's something out there' that we don't yet understand.

To bring some relevance to hunting though, I was present, hunting, when a friend and Whip died in an accident. For a long time afterwards, I felt him 'there' at home and at the hunt yard (and even saw him, on occasion!). There was no doubt in my mind that he didn't just disappear when he died.
