One of my horses is a bit spooky to say the least!! It's not a major problem as when he's in the ring he does concentrate and is not spooky with fillers etc.(jumped in the main ring at Scope Festival last month)

However at home or hacking he is really bad,you have to have your witts about you the whole time!! I was wondering if any of you guys had used any supplements for this kind of thing and if they work?

The thing is i'm worried to try any incase they affect his performance in the ring, i don't want less energy, but a ride without needing velcro might be nice!!!

hi lottue3 - one of my ponys was very spooky earlier in the year and i tried lots of different calmers EX STRESS was good and also Brewers Yeast but eventually we got used to her and now her spooking doesnt bother us quite so ,much have you had your horse long? x

I've had him about 5 months, he's a really sweet horse and great in the ring(which is the main thing!) I'm sure he does the spooking thing when he gets bored or to wake me up!! I'm not overly bothered just thought i'd see if anyone has tried anything with success.

My very very spooky young tb has been on dodsen and horrell placid for a few weeks and I am sure it is working. I rode him today and it was windy and he was much calmer than I would normally expect. We have spooking issues at a certain point in our lane with a bridge ( he is convinced there are lots of trolls under it) and for the last week or so it hasnt been such a big deal for hom. Might just be all our hard work in the school finally paying off though

Hi Lottie3

My girl sound similar to your boy. Very very spooky at home and out hacking, but fine competing.

She's improved over the years and I don't fall off as much as I used to (touch wood!)

Haven't really tried calmers as she's not that full of herself generally, just very looky and spooky. Have fed her Alfa A forever but since someone said it can make horses a bit mad I've taken her off it and must say she's been a fair bit better. Shame, cos I like the smell of Alfa A!!

She no different being fed any sort of oats, sugar beet, barley or haylage so really I think she's just the nervy type.

I'm no use at all I know!!! If you find a calmer that stops spooking I'll be first in the queue to get some!

Sounds similar to my boy - I tried NAF magic last year. I did feel it made a slight difference, but not enough to make it work the cost. I keep him on low energy feeds which helps a little but just came to the conclusion he will always be a spooky horse.

Might be worth feeding something like Mag Ox or Cal Mag which are magnesium basd products. A lot of grazing in the UK is deficient in magnesium and as this is for the central nervous system it can make some horses more spooky and living on their nerves. Worth a try, it's not that expensive. A side effect is that it is good for their feet too!

Hiya not sure if this is helpful or not but had my very spooky TB for nearly 2 years and tried him on numerous calmers not to have had much difference in his spooking - Sorry

Thanks everyone for your reply's. He's not on any high energy feed, just hi-fi and nuts so can't really cut anything out!

Uggy 1 - Does the placid mix affect there way of going other than the spooking,as like Madhossy's horse he's not full of himself generally?

ISH_Mad - Was thinking of magnesium, will give it a go and let you know. Thanks.

I suggest you get some Brewer's Yeast and feed two scoops a day for a couple of weeks. I bet you see a great improvement! It is not so expensive as the 'calmers' you can buy, is great for their digestion, discourages midges and is the best calmer I have found - and I have tried several. It is magic for my boy; see if it works for you

Thank you. Funnily enough i use brewers yeast for one of my liveries to aid digestion(much cheaper than pink powder or such like, and very effective) I didn't know it had other powers!!! Will give it a try and let you know. Thanks.
