BBC not only yet again ignored horse sports but also females, why yet again has Mary King not got a look in achieved much more than Andy Murray ever will, and a lot of other nominated men, feel like not paying licence as most horse sport on sky.

It really is a digrace! As a PE teacher I find this another backwards step in all the efforts we do to promote females in sport. I agree I don't want to pay my licence and defo will not he watching the awards. Shame on the BBC : (

Which makes you wonder why the beach volleyball team didn't get a mention!

Seriously if two "mens" magazines get a vote then you would think surely something like cosmopolitan or Marie Claire should get a vote but they don't because they don't regularly cover sport and don't have a sport correspondent. Perhaps we should aim our disgust at the women's magazines........

They were saying on the radio the nominations come from 28 newspapers and magazines including, telegraph, times, guardian, nuts and zoo so a pretty broad spectrum.

They were also saying it could be more about personality than just achievements and those shortlisted are higher profile because the media report their particular sports achievements.

Sad as it is no bugger would ever have heard of Mary King or Laura Becholstrimer ( sp ) outside of equestrianism.

Agree it is a poor show not just for equestrian sports but generally any sport that does not get the TV coverage. There are many many 'Champions' out there that many of us do not know by name but they are at the 'top' of their sport, be it equestrian. Motorcross, Cross county runners, etc

Lets hope the Olympics in London 2012 will help cover and bring to the fore front our superb equestrian teams be it male or female.

We all need to BIG them up and promote!!

I don't think we can complain that equestrian sports are under represented as there have been several equestrian winners in the past, but the fact that no women were nominated from any sport this year is worrying, and I think indicative of the coverage that sport gets and the perception in the media that "sport" is for men and is mainly about football, rugby, cricket and golf.

Women's magazines don't cover sport, they have a health section that might talk about non-competitive sport but they don't cover sports news, sporting acheivements or recognise that sport is a great way of keeping fit and healthy. It is about time that they changed this, if nothing else people are more likely to keep fit if they are doing a sport they enjoy rather than slogging down the gym or in an aerobics class. If women's magazines are genuinely interested in women's health perhaps they should be encouraging women to get involved in sport whether it be equestrian sport, cycling, swimming, team sport, athletics etc.

On the basis that the publications who select the shortlist HAVE to cover general sport it is them that we have to get the message across to. H&H can't have a say as it isn't a general sports publication. We need to convince the newspapers that women want to see coverage of sports that interest them and the women's magazines that they shouldn't be ignoring sport.

Equestrian Sports are probably fairly represented. AP McCoy won last year, Zara Phillips in 2006 Princess Anne in 1971 and David Broome in 1960.

In addition equestrian sports have been represented in the nominees far more years.

I have to agree with you re equestrian sports but I do think it was a shame there were no female nominees.

If I remember rightly we even had Red Rum in the studio one year!

I watched the nominations and they said it hasn't been a brilliant year for women's sport overall. It is disappointing not to see any equestrians nominated but there is often someone. I agree Mary King is fantastic but although her achievements are celebrated within the equestrian community, maybe they weren't deemed high profile enough for the wider world. British women's pro-cycling has had some great results this year but they just don't make it into the new like the men's cyclists.. even non-cyclists know who Mark Cavendish is because his achievements are covered more in the specialist and wider media.

I think it probably says more about the state of the coverage of women's sport than anything else. Hopefully women's sports will do well at the Olympics and we'll see a few more in next year's list. This is quite an interesting article and I agree with a lot of it... what about women like Rebecca Adlington? http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereve...-for-bbc-sports-personality-of-the-year-award

Must admit I didn't really understand why they nominated that golfer (Darren Clarke?)... I know he won a championship this year but I don't think he's really done much else? Again, Andy Murray, he hasn't really shone (easy to say from my desk seat when I don't have to play pro tennis! ;) ). There are definitely female athletes who deserve to be in that list more than those two guys...IMHO!

I would love more than anything to see Mary King be recognised for the part she has played in the sporting world.

Does nuts cover proper sport? Don't read it!

nuts doesn't cover anything proper/real if you get my drift!

Tracey Moseley was World Champion of Downhill Ladies Cycling last year and yet hardly got a mention. Yet they go on and on about sportsmen that don't win anything.
They go up a mountain on a ski lift and have to ride back down - scarey!

I don't think I've even seen that covered in the cycling media, let alone general media. Says a lot about the coverage of women's sport...

I'm not sure of the criteria used ie is it for sporting achievement or personality. if it is personality I can see why Darren Clarke is nominated. Not only very good year achievement wise but a "good" personality. Shows his emotion, gives interviews when somewhat "intoxicated" and is a typical good bloke rather than the usual bland egotistical footballer.

Although I suspect it is more for achievement afterall AP won last year:)

I suspect the journalists who select still see equestrianism as somewhat elite - how wrong can they be.
