Ok, so have had a quote for spraying for docks, buttercups, etc., and then fertilizing 2 days later...... seemed reasonable but since then 2 other people have rung me back in response to my enquiry for spraying and one of them has said that there is no point spraying now as its too late and the same with the fertilizing...

So my question is - is it really too late to do it now? I have literally not much grass but mostly buttercups, thistles, docks and stinging nettles.... the paddocks that have been rested are showing virtually zero grass regrowth despite being harrowed and rolled recently... I am having to give my horses hay and feed to supplement them.... its over 4 acres and with 4 horses and is rotated....

Any help and advice would be appreciated as I would hate to just throw this money away!...

Well we are just sparying and fertilizing fields after first cut of silage, and I'm sure my dad has done it this way for a good 20years, always worked ok for him.

spraying now will kill the weeds that have grown this year but you are too late to stop this years weeds from seeding so you'd have to spray next year as well

due to the poor weather my farmer is still fertilising now
so long as there is rain the fertiliser will go into the ground and make some difference but not as much as if it was put onto ground around spring growth time

traditionally it's too late but it's up to you - you won't get as much benefit for what is now a very expensive substance (fertiliser costs rocketing same as everything else) but you will get some so long as you gamble on there being rain and not a dry spell or drought

I believe it is too late, we have had to put off spraying for weeds. They are past their strongest growing phase, which is when they need to be hit. We are still going to fertilize as any help seems essential this year.
