i have just had my paddock sprayed last night for ragwort and other weeds..

could you tell me how long i have to keep the horses off and also do i need to go and pick all the dead ones up.

i do know that horses wont eat it when its green as too bitter but when its died off they do!

any help would be very grateful

i have to older horses and one yearling ,, the other 2 are ok with the elecy fencing but the wee one has no respect for it at all .. i brought my battery home for a good charge and re done all the fencing last night so hopefylly she will get a belt off it and not go near it

It depends on the active ingredient of the chemical so refer to the instructions for the chemical used (ther person spraying th field should ley you have a copy). (Could be up to 2 weeks before horses can go back on it) You will need to remove and then immediately burn all the ragwort as otherwise the horses will eat it and it is still as dangerous to them.

As regards electric fencing make sure that it is not touching any vegetation and earthing prematurely or alternatively maybe the tape has broken down internally and the current is not getting through it or get a more powerful unit. You can buy a tester to check the current distribution along the fence.
