Dear all

I bought some sprenger bow stirrups 4 3/4 size from the moment I rode in them they felt small. I have size 6 fit and ride in mountain horse jod boots. I had a fall on my horse at the weekend she spooked and slipped on some mud at walk and I went over her head. It is now gaining to me that the only reason I went over head is because my feet didn't come out of the stirrups. I am usually good and sliding off out the side door. This time I flipped into the air over her head.

Does anyone else find the stirrups small. Are they only really meant to be used for show jumping.

Anyone tell me some other good makes of stirrups I get a sore ankle when riding from a previous injury.

Thanks all

Think going to have to but the Sprenger stirrups on e bay.

Are your MH boots the wide ones? maybe they did get stuck and you need the men's stirrup?

I have the same size stirrups and size 8 feet in ariats and i haven't had this issue, two of us on the yard have them, i use mine for hacking and jumping (can't afford two pairs so different set on my dressage saddle) but the other lady uses them purely for dressage neither of us have experienced this...

I don't have wide feet they are smaller than my normal 4 3/4 and have to say considering the price not impressed with the quality of them. Difficult as we don't have any tack shops near us so everything has to come from online shops.

Main point is just don't feel safe in them. Might be better for a teenager.

So looks like someone will get a bargin when I sell them.

If you dont.'t feel safe i think you are right to sell them. As for stirrups to ease concussion maybe the john whitaker air cushion ones? never tried them but heard some like them...

On the advice of my friend (who recommended the sprengers to me) I bought the mens size standard sprengers and these fit my tuffa country riders fine, but both her and I would have found the ladies ones too small. However I am not sure if they make the bow balance ones in a mens size?

Not Sprengers but I had the same problem when I bought some Tyne Muck boots, riding style; they were so much wider and with a higher foot which meant my foot was higher in the stirrup than with my Equitector paddock boots that I had to go up to a 5" in spite of me using my other stirrups for about 20 years, including with Hunter wellies with no problems at all. I just did not feel safe with my normal 4.1/2" at all even though the boots themselves are great.

I'm a size 4 and I really like mine, I don't find them to narrow or too wide. I think mountain horse boots are really chunky though ?

The Mountain Horse boots are quite wide as they seem to have that extra bit at the sides where the stirrups sit.
You need to make sure you have at least 1/4 inch either side gap to ensure you don't get your feet stuck.
I have used Sprengers for years and never had a problem.
Maybe you need a bigger size?

I have got a pair of 5" Dublin flexi- irons (Sprenger copies) as my new Woofwear boots make them too wide. Oddly the size 7s that I've got need 5" stirrups and the size 6 that Lizzie has got fit well into my last 4 3/4" pair!!

I really rate the Dublins. I've not ridden in Sprengers but I do feel the benefit of the Dublin stirrups :)

Hi all

Just sold my sprengers to a friend with smaller feet. Popped up to tack shop to get the bigger size. Measured the foot bed and you are right it includes the rubber each side so the 4/3/4 are only actually 10cm for you foot.

Wil see how the next size comes up and let you know. Fab stirrups to ride in worth the investment.
