my mare is driving me crazy so I would be grateful for any advice. this might be long because i think i need to give some background so sorry for rambling on. She was on box rest for 4/5 months with a fractured leg from may onwards last year and i only bought her last april, so i have never had a proper summer with her. she has always been not fussed about other horses, but since the kick she is a real loner out in the field and has been desperate to come in at 3pm all winter (she is stabled over night, out during day in the winter).
For the last few months, she has started to be really aggressive one of the geldings stabled to the side of her (i have asked YO to move her stable but no room yet). she double barrels at the walls at feed time and looks like she is possessed (she is fine with people!). Im terrified she is going to put her leg through the stable.
Now spring has started, she has got loads worse, and now she is gradually getting bolshier with me. last night she dragged me for about 50 yards because she wanted to go in a different direction when I was bringing her in. she has also got nappy again on hacks which she has not done since she first came off box rest. she is not in season, so i dont know whether it is hormones or just her being a miserable g*t! i have cut her feed down but wondered whether to give her a calming or mare supplement. I put her out over night for the first time last night so fingers crossed that may quieten her down. sorry to go on, thanks very much for reading!

it sounds as if one of those mare supplements might help her. Leaving her out at night is a great idea too. My 6 year old was getting so rude to handle and ride that I have left him out day and night for the last 2 months and he is a different horse! Good luck with her.

If you get a blood test done by the vet they can tell you if she has a hormone imbalance which is causing this. My mare had an imbalance a few years ago and she went on a course of treatment and although we still have problems with her first season of the year the rest of the time she is fine.
