Hi!

So I have a 3year old springer spaniel and he is whining like mad when I leave him even if I just to go to the toilet! He doesn't do it when my partner goes out or leaves the room its just me (I've had him from a pup my partner and I got together a year ago)

He gets walked twice a day for at least an hour and also runs around the yard, he is not left for any longer than 5 hours. He gets fed naturediet and has done since a pup.

Can anyone give some tips on how to stop him?

Thanks so much in advance

:)

Put the radio on thats what we do, helps take the edge of mine when i walk through the door when shes been on her own as she would normally knock me to the floor but now she is still excited and i don't end up going splat!

but i will be watching the thread as she has started to sit outside my bedroom down and whine (when im at work...)

We've just got our first spaniel but find a radio is a good one, we leave ours on for our 18 week old when we are out for short periods and he is fine.

We also give him lots to occupy him, even if we are in the house but go upstairs and he has to go behind his stairgate. Things like stuffed kongs, a scented doggy chew or a frozen carrot. This keeps him quiet and occupied for long enough, even if he is finished before we appear it seems to have chilled him out enough to not be bothered by the fact that he is on his own.

This sounds like a learned response, I presume this is something he has just started doing?

Make sure you don't return to him until he is quiet. Only give him praise when he is quiet, and completely ignore him and stay silent when he is whining.

I always leave the radio on when I go out, but I don't think this will make a difference in this situation.

Sounds like he's anxious and the boyfriend has changed the dynamic. If you can tire him out and occupy his mind, he may be better. No chance of getting him a friend? You can build up the time you leave him from seconds to hours to try to stop the vocal reaction. Have you checked him when he's left? Like with a camera? If he's fine when you're out, I wouldn't worry too much.
