Since we had a bit of a do in our lesson she just hasn't felt right and has been bucking intermittantly and only in canter, so I gave her 3 weeks off and brought her back into work slowly but she hasn't improved. I really don't think she is just being naughty as she is swishing her tail and flattening her ears when you ask for canter which is very unlike her - she is usually so willing and happy in her work. Her saddle has been checked and is fine but I have put a prolite pad on as well just in case. I cannot get a pain response anywhere on her back and she is happy in herself.
I was feeling a bit flummoxed and depressed so I had the vet take a look, she too couldn't find any pain in her back or quarters but agrees with me that it sounds like a pain response rather than being naughty. She has had her teeth done at the same time and they are fine, she is not lame, and is nicely flexible (can happily scratch her ear with her hoof and do carrot stretches!) and the vet commented on how evenly muscled and well she looked. So she is on bute for a week to see if that helps, I have to ride her as normal and see if her attitude changes. She is also being booked in for a session with a physio. Both me and the vet feel that it is probably a pulled muscle somewhere and hopefully it will come right, but it may take more time.

Just feeling a bit down at the moment and could do with a hug

She has been going so well and it feels like we have gone backwards about 12 months, I just hope that it is something we can sort and I will have my lovely, happy bouncy dressage pony back. I know lots of horses have worse injuries or illnesses and this sounds a bit pathetic but this is the first time that she has not been right and I am an incessent worrier!

Sorry for the whinge!

*hugs* hopefully she'll get better soon!
my mare isnt too happy either, think it's her ovaries which have started to cause pain over a period of time

another horse on my yard had something similar, always thought it was her back but turned out it was her ovaries-maybe worrth talking to the vet about?

It's not a whinge! You're worried and anxious, as would anyone be.

You've come a long way with Spring and I'm sure this is just a little blip.

Hugs to you L and healing vibes for Springy.

Has this been going on since her "bouncy bouncy lucy on the fence" thing?
Poor Springbok.
Have u got an Osteo coming out? she has been going so well, and hopefully the bute will ease her discomfort. Im sure it wont set her back, she was remembering everything, and she may just come back with a more focused outlook!
Keep us updated!!

Yes (sorry for not being in touch - I have just been taking it easy with her). She is just so stiff through her neck and we have lost all that nice bouncy, roundness that we had.

It is almost like she is frightened of canter and if I attempt to get a contact in canter she explodes!
We are going to have her on the bute to see if it is actual pain or if it is attitude (or thinking it is going to hurt) and then she will have a physio look at her and see if it is tightness that can be released.
Poor pony - have to say the bucking has got quite spectacular and I have nearly recreated the 'fence moment' on a number of occaisions!

Sadly I am fairly new to the area so don't have any direct experience of anyone but my vet knows of a physio (vet is a friend of a friend and is very good), I am a bit of a sceptic about a lot f 'back people', I have been given the details of a few chiropracters but as we feel it is soft tissue we will try the physio first. Not sure of any osetopaths in the area.

I was very cynical too.

I chose the Osteo route because they are a combination of Chiro and Physio and can sort out the causes and symptoms alongside each other, and it's only one charge!

I really hope you find the source of her problems quickly and get back to enjoying each other again soon.

These horses are such a worry but hopefully the physio will be able to sort it out. Its amazing the difference even one treatment can make.

Yes, she has been lunged with and without tack, with and without side-reins. Whilst she is not lame she is just not quite her usual bouncy self

Really? Ah that has made my day! Thank you

I think she is pretty fab (most of the time!) but it is only recently people have started to actually like her, for the first 12 months, where she was a bad-mannered beast, everyone thought I was mad!
