Spur rub issues

I have been using my new super dooper spurs on Grace and noticed they have rubbed some of the skin away and left her with a raw mark on her side
frown.gif
I cannot understand why they have done this as I have used my trainer's before, they are lovely and smooth on the edges and I have not really been using them because she has been such a lovely lady to ride
frown.gif

Her coat is changing at the moment, could that have something to do with it?

I am taking her out competing tomorrow, so of course I will not wear any spurs to further aggrevate the problem but am I going to get pulled up because of them? She seems to have such thin skin that I have this problem every so often, usually at the beginning of spring (well, two years ago I did). Her mouth also cuts really easily sort of between the noseband and the bit. It looks as though it is the ring on the bit causing it to mark, but again, this is lovely and smoothe, no sharp or rough edges

Any advice?

Coat change can cause sensitive horses to rub at this time of year with anything, rugs, legs, numnahs spurs etc etc. Especially if they have that horrible coarse wiry hair phase. Can use canter mane and tail on where your legs go, will stop friction

cornicresine (sp) will help the hair grow back from your spur rubs. We used thin fleece sheets under the saddle at home to stop it happening.

Thanks... Will get some Bonjela, was thinking perhaps something like Bepantham (sp?) for her mouth because it is almost like a nappy rash kind of thing as there is actually nothing there to rub. It looks as though it could be the folds of her skin rubbing as it is smack bang in the middle where nothing really sits

What will the pop socks do?

I have been putting vaseline on, but this seems to be exacerbating the issue somewhat in the past as it makes the skin softer.

[/ QUOTE ] Ditto.

It's just the time of year if they are sensitive, does she have marks from her reins too? Don't worry on Sunday most of the horses I saw BD had them

Mine gets rubbed by anything this time of year! I can only wear my leather boots as anything else rubs him, and only wear implus type spurs as these seem to be ok.

He gets rubbed on his shoulder where his breastplate goes, and has started to get a rub under his girth so have put his sheepskin girth sleeve on like I always have to! He's half native, you wouldn't think he'd be so sensitive!

I have the same mouth problem, i think it is one particular noseband rubbing the fold when the bit is used if that makes sense, i am using sudocrem but need to find alternative as not FEI legal!

Do they not get warm though with the fleece sheets? She was really sweaty today after my lesson

Do you mean the same cornucresin you put on their feet? She is a bit sensitive on the skin department, but I could put a tester patch somewhere first.

Yes, she has them there too, but that area is just a bit bald whereas the spurs bit is pink

Feel like a really bad rider...

She also has a huge rub mark from where I lunged her yesterday where the side reins were resting on her shoulder... damned orange horses!!!

Pop sock over boot (as it protects from harsh leather - but if in comp check rules and need to be same colour) and vasline JUST for comp.

Otherwise let dry as much as possible and if you want to school go for towel option.

Is he orange by any chance?

She is not too bad with her girth but I think if it gets any balder I will have to invest in a fluffy sleeve

You're not alone. Q always gets them at this time of year along with Rein rubs on his neck.
I'm riding him in Impulse spurs at the mo as they seem to not mark.

In a few weeks when the summer coat come through it usually stops happening.

Thanks... will use vaseline just for the competition tomorrow and then look for a thin towel to put on top of her numnah for schooling (although after tomorrow she will be having a few days off just lunged and turned out in the arena as she worked her little socks off for me this morning).

Nope, he's bay! I am trying to resist the urge to buy fluffy covers for his breastplate too, he's going to look like a big sheep soon lol

Thanks... you are making me feel less of a cruel rider now. I felt so bad because she had worked so hard and we had the best lesson I have ever had on her

I do have some Impuls spurs in the garage but always felt they were a bit cumbersome... will give them a go if needs be, but she went so well today in my long plain rounded ones, I really felt we had cracked it.

Have same problem with my ginger boy.
Gold label skin hardener is great for spur rubs - once the skin has healed, rub this stuff daily where the spurs rub (it looks like a pink jelly) and the skin hardens up and the spurs will no longer rub.

For the mouth - I put lanolin (a wool fat) in the corners/edges of his mouth before I put the bit in and this helps prevent the bit from rubbing. I used to use Bonjela but Bane used to like the taste and lick it off!! I now use Preparation H (haemorrid cream) as that helps soothe and heal the skin and also acts as a slight skin hardener

I wouldn't use that or sudocrem before riding, as it will get dragged into the mouth by the bit and it probably doesn't taste too good.

First question - have you been cleaning your spurs (honestly now!) after every use? The grease build up caused extra friction!

I have swapped to impuls for the time beign and save my longer ball ended versions for competition.

Otherwise you could use a silicon grease or coat shine on your spurs only. If you spray the whole of the horses side you might find it slippery!

I use human aloe lip balm on the corners of my boys lips to avoid any rubs.
