If I see ONE more person using spurs horrendously Im going to go nuts! Saw 2 people using them, their horses had bleeding sores....... And one other girl who got eliminated jumping, she kept leaning down to pull her spurs up to boot it! Absolutely horrified. These people should be banned from using spurs.

I am quite a fan of spurs and i know i shouldnt but i do rely on them being a small rider on a big horse.
But this is horrific and shouldnt be allowed, says alot about the rider, if they can do this to their horse then they shouldnt own one!

Thats awful

Very very sad indeed.
I hold my hands up and say I wear spurs all the time but I have NEVER had a horse have sores on their sides. Even when i rode my very thin skinned chestnut.

I was horrified at Blewbury the other week when a young girl had everything, huge bit, spurs, couldnt have been any older than 13 on a very fine looking pony, she spent the whole time jabbing it in the mouth and kicking and i mean legs right off the side of the saddle and BAM straight into the sides of the little horse. I was gobsmacked and wanted to pull said child off pony and give her a good kick! they were eliminated at fence 4 as well

I wear spurs, but I use them correctly, hate when people don't use them properly, horrible to hear that some horses get bleeding sores because of their idiotic riders

i use spurs when im schooling but apart from that i dnt use them, some people really dont care about there horse do they?

When there are smooth rowels and impulse spurs there is no excuse for marking the thinnest skinned of horses.

I use them at home, as I'd rather squeeze than boot. However I only use them jumping when required, as its easy to accidentally dig it, I am getting impluse spurs as my big smooth rowels aren't allowed BSJA - even though the surface area is bigger and they are kinder than POW spurs.

If it is an affiliated competition, report them immediately! They can be fined or warned for that (bleeding sores is not acceptable for BD, BE or BSJA) and if it is unaffiliated, report it to the organiser - again any decent riding club or show centre should do something to stop the competitor continuing.

that is disgusting.

if i saw something like that im not sure i would be able to keep quiet.

i havent worn spurs but am going to try impulse spurs soon for xc altho not sure my mare will tolerate them as shes quiet sensitive

Agree that misuse of spurs is unacceptable, but a few times my horse has come back from a xc round with sores on his side - nothing to do with spurs as don't always wear them but the fact that he's so fine skinned combined with sweating that th riders boots have rubbed his side - so not always the case that the spurs have been misused.
