Someone told me the other day that spurs with a rowel/wheel on are kinder than blunt ball end spurs.

His theory was that blunt end or ball spurs tend to dig into the horse's side. Whereas, the wheel revolves on the top of the skin and therefore doesn't dig in. Would you agree that rowel/wheel spurs are kinder?

I have always ridden with blunt spurs (don't use them every time I ride of course), as I thought they were kinder than rowels! I feel so ignorant if rowels are kinder, as
i have always thought i was doing the best thing for my horse.

What do you all think.

It is the same debeat as to how kind an type of bit it.

It all depends on the legs using them & how they use them.

Smooth rowels are definitely kinder than POW type spurs. I you put them against your skin you will see why.

Howeber spiked rowels and smooth rowels are not the same thing!

The new rollerball / impuls spurs are the kindest, followed by a smooth rowel, followed by a ball end, followed by a prince of wales spur followed by spiked rowels

However not all rowel spurs are the same, and I have a pair where the rowel moves too much, and this can pinch the skin and has marked my horse. However my huge smooth rowelled mexican spurs have never marked and they are a bigger rowel (and better made!)

You can buy a rollerball spur now. They are sold for training and recommended for sensitive horses and children. They are also dressage legal. Some rowels can be very kind to your horse. Roll them over your own skin first to see.
