Who uses them and why?

I think im going to have to invest in some, my girlie just seems completely unaffected by my whip and even less so by my leg when out hacking.

Schooling she is alright, responds to the whip if needed generally but out hacking she will stop dead (on roads sometimes) and not move for love nor money.

I aways ride my english horses in spurs as a back up in case I need them (they hardly ever come into use though

). I don't bother on pony though, he's quick enough as it is and my lower legs hang waaaay too low for them to have any effect

Mines only 6yo and id of thought she'd be like a little firecracker but she was owned for a year by an 8yo and is consequently very dead to the leg and rather hard mouthed. Such a shame.

We're working on softening her mouth as much as i can but the 'dead leg' scenario is useless, sometimes i give her a smack with the whip and she will actually turn to me as if to say 'and....'

Oh my, we're on the other extreme - Brandy is hyper-sensitive to the leg, so just think forwards and we're off. Her mouth is a bit dead though, and she's got a chocking great neck to tense up if she feels a bit vexed about the ways things are going, but that's a whole nuther issue.

i wear them only on my pony when jumping and tb when going xc.on rebel (pony) as my legs a bit long and so makes it bit eisier plus he needs winding up. tb cuz he had nappy probs b4 but on both i hardly ever actully use them its just nice to no there, there if i need them. but would never use them on my wb as she a fire cracker any way so she dont need any winding just see a jump and i got probs LOL

I wear them with my ISH. Dont really use them very much, he is just crafty and knows when I havent got them on! Good to back up a squeeze when the horse is just ambling along not listening and also good for hacking when you are in a sticky moment. If you've got a good steady lower leg, I cant see any problem.

Being little I tend to wear them on bigger horses (16.2hh+) because I feel unaffective otherwise as I can't get my legs round them to ride 'properly' but find with the spurs I can ride effectively.

I always wear them when schooling Jim because they seem to be his cue that it's proper work rather than just exercise or a play session. They don't make any difference to how forward he is but the do make him more responsiveness to weight aids, bendier & softer. I can get the same results without spurs but it's harder work & I end up knackered just as everything starts to come together - he's a big strong lad & I prefer an easy life!

I wear them as I cannot use a whip on my baby or he has a complete hissy fit and I use biggies on my loan horse as he is like riding a heffalump and in order to do decent work I need the forward momentum, he also has a very nasty habit of shooting backward with no self preservation and the spurs help to avoid going into ditches, fences, trees and the like, great fun really - why do I do it!!!!!!
