I have posted here before about my Sporting Lucas terriers fighting, and have managed to keep it pretty much under control for a while now. However the bitch has been in season so they have all been separated, and it is proving difficult for them to readjust now she is out of season and they are all back in the house. If I was to castrate one of the boys

which one should it be. Details as follows:

Chopper - 5 yo and v big for his breed. Alpha dog + v. much mine. Never been used for stud. Placid nature but does retaliate.

Otis - 3yo and quite small. Has been used as a stud dog a little. Friendly to everyone but can cause fights sometimes.

How do I decide which one? Any input gratefully received!

Can't you have both of them fitted with the implant? I know it costs 30quid a year but it takes away the agression.

Neighbours have two male cockers who are fighting every 5 mins, she's in the same situation and I think she's going to try the implant first.

When you say Chopper doesn't retaliate, surely if he doesn't Otis has nobody to fight with??? If he is the alpha surely he stands his ground?

I'd either have them both cut or do the bitch, then they wouldn't have anything to fight over. I'd also be after them if they so much as grumbled under their breath at each other, that is not on.
We have five bitches (one done) and six dogs (four done) Even when the bitches come in season we have never had any squabbling, ours know it isn't allowed, it would be more than their lives are worth! If you have more than one dog/bitch, you need to be very strict but fair right from the outset so they know the rules.

We have had all this aswell this last couple of weeks.don't know whats got into my mini dakkies......every time I turn round they were scrapping......and yet normally they get on so well. Maybe I should get the boys castrated but then that wouldn't stop the girls having a go. I separated them all and put them in 2s.we have 6 of them. nightmare!

Trust me MFH I am v. strict. The reason I am reluctant to have both done is because I would like to breed from the bitch (she is only a year old at the minute) preferably with Otis, who is a proven stud dog. There aren't many Sporting Lucas terriers around either. I have two neutered terriers who are no bother so I know it would work, just would rather not have both of them done if it could be avoided. Thanks for your input!

Then why not use the implant, or just have the Choppers bits taken away.

If you use the implant it can be taken out at a later date and the dog can still sire pups.

Bloody males and their testosterone levels!!!

There are a number of books on how to handle dog-dog aggression with positive reinforcement training. If you're interested, I could look them up for you?
