It is possible to do it at home and our vets showed me how but I never seem to get it right
. I think that you can google it to see graphic pictures to instruct you.

Your vet can show you how to do it or you might find that one of the vet nurses can show you, which would be cheaper. Just make sure not to get the juice on you or you'll smell of it for days

Don't know the size of your dog but I've done it with my late Smooth Collie and Norwegian Buhund. What worked best for me was to stand over the dog, holding it on place with my legs just before were their back legs begin (the "front" could thereby try to move around if it wanted to, but the area I needed to access didn't go anywhere). Held the tail with one hand and used the other hands thumb on one side and index finger on the other side to do the "deed". http://www.dfordog.com/didyouknow_anal_glands.htm
I began with my fingers a little bit lower than the fingers on the third picture in the link and then just gently sort of pushed upwards. As far as I know, if what comes out is the colour of poo it's okay, but if the colour is yellow, whiteish and/or the consistency is sort of like thick, creamy then you're to late and the glands are infected and you still have to go to the vet.

I have done my dogs glands, the first time took a little while of prodding and squeezing but I got there eventually, patient dog, rubber gloves and cotton wool essential, good luck.

vet charges about £17 I think (you basically get charged an examination fee), and he needs it doing quiet regular.
Think the muzzle will be going on, else I will end up with fangs in my leg!
