St Bernard puppy

Hi everyone,
So at last I have decided I am going to get a st Bernard. I have wanted one all my life and have decided now is a good time.
Does anybody on here have any experience ? If so do you have any advice on what I am looking for in a pup. I want a boy and the breeder I am going to has 8 boys. Also I am going to see them for the first time when they are 4 weeks. Do you think at that young age that I wont really see a character of the puppies?
Any other advice on the breed greatly apprieciated.

We had a St Bernard as a child and he was fabulous if

you have the space
you love cleaning because slobbers get over all surfaces
you are prepared that they don't have a long lifespan ( 8yrs for ours ).

Real characters though and lovely dogs if you go with your eyes open.

At that age you should get an idea of the shy or inquisitive nature of the puppies.
 
Yep very much ready for slobber and life span.
Do I go for the most confident puppy that comes to me straight away or the 2nd. I just don't know how to choose from 8 of them. Lol. Thank you
 
I have always been told NOT to get the first puppy that comes to you (conveniently 4 years AFTER I got my then troublesome pooch :rolleyes:)
or the last one hanging back.

Make sure you have good Hip and Elbow scored parents.

Also have a good knowledge and discuss diet with breeders, being the large breed they are, they are very prone to bloat.

I have a cross who drools everywhere, so hope you don't mind slobber.

There was on one the village I grew up in, friendliest boy ever. Him and a newfoundland were neighbours and regulary thought it was fun to play football in the park together. However the Saint Bernard was always strong on the lead and not well trained lol but such a fool in a good way.
 
Depends on the kind of adult dog you want. I like easy dogs, do as they're asked, character but obedient, so I got the one that didn't mind cuddles and being shoved onto my shoulder.

I had 9 to choose from so went for the ones that were pretty then checked for temperament. I would have rejected all the pretty ones if I hadn't immediately picked up the one I took home and found that he was 'the one'. I did look closely at them all but Bear was sweet, cuddly, did as I wanted.

You might find that you don't have much choice after the breeder takes his and the others higher on the list have been. :confused:
