Can anyone recommend me a good lightweight rug for use in the stable and as turnout? Do these even exist!? I've asked my yard owner if she can do morning turnout for me and she said yes, as long as he is ready in his rug! I don't want him standing in a turnout all night in his stable, but if I'm going up to put his rug on I may as well turn him out too!

Thanks!

Just use a turnout rug. They're mostly all breathable these days. When mine were in livery they used most of their rugs. Now they are at home I often leave them in in their turnout rugs at night, especially if they are wet (on the outside, I wouldn't leave them in a rug that was wet on the inside). :)

You can use any turnout rug in the stable, I often do this as long as the rug fits really well so is not rubbing their shoulders as they are in the same one most of the time. A wet rug will dry if left on, as long as you have a spare in case it gets really soaked.

If he was out 24/7 you wouldn't think of swapping his rug over unless it was wet inside. No problem with him being in a stable with a turnout rug on, I never use stable rugs any more. It's a great way to dry a rug too :D

Yes, good point! I do love all of his little stable rugs and fleeces though - just because he looks so cute in them! Oh well, he'll just have to wear those when I can get up to turn him out :)

Maybe you could buy a My Little Pony and rug set to keep you happy on the other days :D ??

Hee hee i love these too, i call stable rugs jammies and love tucking them up in them when its cold and rainy! Deano has the snuggliest stable rug in the world and I can't wait to see him tucked up in it on Christmas Eve - how tragic is that??! Ha ha, i know it is just a human thing tho so wouldn't hesitate to leave him in his turnout overnight in the stable - i'm sure he is just as happy even if it doesn't fill his over sentimental owner with a fuzzy warm glow ;)

I use only turn outs now- i only change if its wet inside. I don't like taking off warm dry rug to put cold one on both morn and night. Although if in for long time- box rest or yard too icy so can't get out then i do tend to change to stable rug.

I stopped changing rugs over a few years ago as I couldn't see the point. I use Shires turnouts on all of mine as they fit well but there are lots of well made rugs out there. If they come in wet the horses own heat dries the rug out. I have never had any problems.

I'm glad I'm not the only soft horsey mum :) I honestly think Lewis loves his pjs; he looked so pleased when I put his fleecy rug on today... (although maybe it was more the massive hay net that was causing the glint in his eye...)

Thanks everyone! I'm going to get him a new lightweight turnout as his current one is a bit big so I think he needs something better fitting anyway but now won't feel guilty about leaving him in the stable in it :) If anyone fancies helping me shop for one feel free!

Yes!! I call them jammies too and love to see them tucked up for the night.

Sorry I'm going to buck the trend and say I prefer to see horses rugs changed when they are brought in to a stable rug. In winter this may be the best check for rubs and discomfort etc. I ask for rugs to be changed and nag my groom to do this when she is doing them as the modern trend is not to groom , pick out feet or re rug - personally as an old bat of mid forties I think the pony club must be slipping nowerdays. 2 /3 of my yard owners in the past changed rugs the last one was younger and used to leave it on and I used to nag her too:)

Mine stay in turnouts - I don't have time to change them in winter and I don't like taking off a rug which is nice and warm inside and putting on on which is cold inside, which stable rugs usually are if they've been lying around during the day. Also my big one lies in her poo all the time and the turnout rugs are a bit more sturdy to cope with this!!
