Ok, so my boy is 26 - and with this sudden cold snap I have noticed that everything is getting a bit more creeky and stiff !!

Am off to Your Horse Live in November and thinking of treating him to some stable boots for the winter, just to keep the chill of his leggies overnight when it is really cold.

Can anyone recommend good ones? And do you think they help ??

I have no idea of this, I would be unsure of using them. If you use straw, and it is deep would that not keep his legs quite warm?

Do you use any supplements? I have found devil's claw liquid a fab one for creaky old bones, I used to use it on my 21 yr old arab. He was like a young chap for years (until I had to give him back to owner!)

I do like to look of the thermatex style ones, if they are velcro at least horse can't get tangled up, bet they're expensive though.

My chap has magnetic stable wraps on overnight and they make a real difference!

tbh i'd stick to a deep bed, ideally with rubber mats underneath to insulate him from the cold concrete (the mayomat ones are the thickest and the best insulation, i've found), and warm rugs with a neck-cover. i don't think their legs are supposed to be kept warm tbh, it's better for tendons to be as cool as possible, plus you can see what's going on. just mho though!

Unfortunately I can't keep him on a deep bed for two reasons: the yard only allows shallow shavings beds (disposal costs or something!) and his breathing gets bad so only have him on a very small shavings bed just to soak up the wet and then I can take it all out everynight to let it dry. (plus he never lies down)

He is on ventil-ate for his breathing and equiflex and oil for his joints.

Thought boots on over night might stop any draughts around his legs and help keep his joints a bit warmer to might help prevent some of the stiffness.

Just like to spoil him in his golden years and make sure he is as comfortable and hbappy as possible!

well, if he really never lies down, then tbh i'd move him to a yard where he can have a nice thick bed. an old horse needs its rest at night, sorry.
i've tried doing a pretty shallow bed on my rubber, and they're happier on the thicker bed. they never lie down on the half of the (very large) stable that's just rubber, either.

i used equichaps regularly on my old mare and they never moved. She would come out of her stable far looser after wearing her chaps all year round
She was 30 when I lost her and hadn't laid down in her stable for about 2 years. She was quite stiff after she laid down and didn't have enough room we think to get up again in the stable. Anyhow she lay down in the field during the day and in the winter she would lay down in the sand school. I have found that she was ok on a deep shavings or aubiose bed but a thick straw one was a struggle for her to move around in.

Ive got Equi chaps - but I only use them for overnight use occasionally to keep white socks clean if Im showing the next day! I find they're a bit small for my Welsh D's legs, so guess it depends on how fat your horses legs are!
