Hi
I'm in the lucky position of being able to have my horse home hopefully by spring next year, so am now getting quotes for stables. Does anyone have any advice on whether I should go for front or back windows or anything else that they feel would make the yard design better?

i'd say go for nice big ones, i have 15' x 15' where i am now and wouldn't go back to smaller ones if i could help it!
rear windows are nice. lots of ventilation is good.
if you have grilles between stables it's a good idea to have part of the wall solid so shy horses can hide behind it and get a bit of privacy, esp when eating, kipping standing up, etc - sometimes it makes them really angry and stressy if their neighbour can watch them all the time.

I would always have back windows and also grills between so that they can see but not touch - it is sometimes easier hving the door in the centre of the box as then you have 2 useable corners - I have haynets on one side and corner mangers on the other. Make sure your floors are done properly - nothing worse than pools of pee from where the base wasn't good enough!!

hth!

Both. If you have shutters on them they can be opened or shut as you wish and your horse will thankyou for the extra view.

Nice big expanse of hardstanding outside and the biggest overhang you can manage.

Thanks alot! There are so many things to think about and I know I'll kick myself (or get the horse to do it) if I don't do something I later think is crucial.

forgot about size - as big as possible! Mine are 14.6 x14 and i would never have 12x12;s again!

The comment about the overhang is really important - I have to admit if i was building again on the same site i would go for a barn as we are so exposed - nice to be able to do everything undercover in the high winds/rain particularly!!

also more than one tap and good drainage around where the buckets etc will be washed filled!

Your biggest decision is probably which way to face the stables and secondly making sure you build enough storage, I wish we had space for easy storage of round ble hay - much cheaper!

enjoy, you'll love them when they are done!! Ohh I m all excited now, i want to find a new place to buy and can't wait to build mine!!
