So, this weekend, the husband has been gainfully employed tearing down the old stables as they're a bit past it. We have an old steading and we've knocked down all the old stables to make them bigger (but having one less obviously!).

Now, my question is this - the steading doesn't really have anywhere to tie up so when they're stuck in with the weather in the winter I have to muck out round them. This is ok, but I have problems with having barrows in the stable with me.

Last year, we were horse shopping with friends in Belgium and the stables there had kind of 'half' bottom doors so they had a big gap at the bottom (approx 3ft) otherwise they were normal doors.

Now, I'm thinking that this might solve my problem of having barrows in stables if I can muck out straight into the passage.

Does anyone already have these type of doors or am I just slightly ahead of my time??

If you have them, do you have any problems with them??

All suggestions gratefully received before he starts making the doors tomorrow......

Hi!

We're a big fan of the chains with the plastic coating. all of ours have them and we find they all work well with them. Although i agree you have to be sure that they are set at the right height or they can shimmy out underneath.

excuse my ignorance but what is a steading?

So, the verdict is normal doors with chains??

I think this is the cheapest option and must work well as allot of people use them xxx

I use trailer chains covered in rubber all year for my ponies set at the right height for each. They don't feel so shut in and are easy to duck under for feeds or poo picking.

It doesn't matter which height they're set at I have two persistent offenders who try to limbo under them or climb over them. Am wary of stall guards with mulitple strands across as don't want them getting stuck in the middle of them.

Still haven't decided
