evening all...

so.... we've finally found our dream house. it doesn't have enough land, and it doesn't have stable yard... but other than that it is perfect!

it does however, have a very nice stone barn outbuilding... which looks like it originally was two large stables (in like 1780)...

however, the doors are not as tall as the average stable door... does anyone else have any experience of using something like this? they would be absolutely fine for a pony, but my 15.1hh would have to duck his head to get it out... is that bad? would everyone think i was cruel?

i am considering putting him in there temporarily, until we could change the doorways, or erect a stable yard... or even a field shelter with doors. he stresses if he's out 24/7 so i tend to bring him in for the night twice a week.

also, the floor of the 'stable' is cobbled... is that bad?

a glug of gaviscon, or a large baileys on ice if you get this far (depending on whether, like me, you're preggers, and gaviscon is the best thing in the world...)

I wouldn't personally, D used to have a lower than average stable door and I was always worried that she might hit her head on it if she was looking out and something made her jump.

We have it at new yard.

Dizz's isn't bad, she can stand with her head out without ducking, but I'm careful not to startle her if she has her head in the wrong spot as she is a numpt and will flick her head up sharply.

Would it be possilbe to raise the lintels?

Congrats on the new place though

My stable at home has tiny doorways (just over 6ft, but narrower than a normal stable door). It's fine for my 15h horse, but anything bigger would be a real no-no. I think originally it would have had two stalls for ponies/cobs as it measures 10x16ft. It also has an original cobbled floor which I find great as underneath is presumably earth so drainage is good. I just use a deep litter system with shavings or Easibed and skip out every morning if he's in. I have considered having concrete laid on top, but the cobbles look fab!
