Stable Matting .... Full Bed??

Hi Guys,

My horse is generally out all the time at the moment but he also has a stable with rubber matting. A lot of people on the yard don't put a lot of bedding (shavings) down when their horses are in. Some don't even bother with banks .... Is this ok? Just wondered, as I've always done a full bed of shavings when my horse has been in but then i haven't had rubber matting before.

Rubber matting is supposed to mean you don't need bedding. It keeps the horses warmer and their feet aren't on hard floor. I personally still have a full bed, but it's not a deep bed. I would ALWAYS have banks just incase my horse ever got cast. It all depends on the individual horse, I would use at least a small covering of bedding on the floor to soak up any wet.

I use rubber mats.

most have thin beds or just a sprinkling of shaving down, at least half don't have banks .
I find banks either help or make no difference to horses getting cast.
Its personal choice which route you go.
 
Thanks for the advice. Does make sense to put some down to soak up the wet though. Just always been on a yard with big beds and banks. Seems strange seeing hardly any bedding down!! lol

One of mine is the dirtiest horse ever born, on any type of bedding and however big the stable it was clear it all out every day.

Finally bit the bullet and put down rubber mats with a small amount of bed at one end of the stable. The rubber mats are just swept out daily and hosed off once a week, the bedding is just raked and topped up, as he doesnt poo on it just wee and its wood pellets.
Wish Id done it years ago, id be a millionaire now on what im saving on his bed.

Oh, and he still lays down and seems very content.
