I have an ex race horse that weaves really badly and I am thinking of purchasing a mirror for her stable, anybody got a weaving horse and bought a mirror? has it cured, helped or reduced the weaving in any way. would be interested to hear anything about mirrors. and advice on weavers.

When I bought my pony she wouldnt go anywhere near a stable and upon vetting the vet said we had made a mistake but with time we managed to get her in the stable...trouble is, she wouldnt stay in and would box walk, weave and was very distressed. She got better over time but was much happier living out and would have stayed out but she also hated bad weather!

I purchased a mirror from the stable mirror company and since then ( 5 years ago ) she is happy to be in her stable all night. She was even on box rest for a while and wasnt bothered at all! It was almost an over night thing too. After all of the money I had spent in boredom breakers etc, all I had to do was buy a mirror. To this day, it is the best thing I ever bought!

To add - She is also became very clean to muck out.

I would say get one before you try anything else! There are a few horses on our yard now with mirrors. Some took to them straight away and some attacked them but soon calmed down. You have to remember that they believe it is another horse, so the need to pull rank. Once this is done, they should be fine. This is why you must purchase a proper equine mirror as they are designed for safety!

Good Luck :)

My horse didn't weave but she used to box walk and get very stressed out when in alone. I bought her a mirror and she seemed to really like it. Made a real difference and I was sceptical to start as well so it must have been quite noticeably better! She used to go straight over to her mirror and whicker at it when she came in. I think she thought she had a friend.

My new youngster has her stable now and she seems to like the mirror too. I'd say it might be worth a try considering how cheap they are. You can't lose much by trying and it certainly worked for me.

thanks alot for advice, i will buy a mirror straight away as i have nothing to lose, i have tried everything else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my horse has worn two holes in her stable floor as she weaves so bad and its stressing me out now. did you also have a damaged floor?

Please be wary with what you buy - i have seen a so called proper mirror shatter into shards that make you wince - my blood ran cold when i saw the shape of them, they would have done a serious injury if horse had walked on them, lay down etc

I will buy a proper one from the stable company, I was wondering though what happens a night when the horse cant see himself in the mirror, weave at night? I cant leave the light on all night!!!!!!!!!!!!
when i put her in the field maybe she will fence walk even more as she wont have her mirror mate, if she gets so attatched to it that is. or is it that the mirror calms her down enough to make a complete improvement?
A lso my horse makes a real mess in her stable its like a ruck of pigs have been living in it when i go to clean every morning.

My pony lives out as he weaves so badly in a stable - and occasionally when i travel him alone and we have to stop at lights etc for a few mins he starts to weave in the trailer.

I have had a stable mirror put in and he hasn't done it since.

In a word, yes. She was a confirmed weaver and now just spends her free time staring into the mirror and licking it.
