Stable Names...

what makes a good stable name??

Im struggling to think of one.... Dont want anything to sugar sweet, yet nothing to boring like Colin (sorry if your horse is called colin!).

Soooo far i have 2 names --- George (after my grandfather... but can see how this may be a bit boring) or Carruthers ( a character from The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist and other edwardian boys stories, he was always a posh kind hearted stupidly brave man ... plus if i bred i would call the foal Kevingtons Cracking Carruthers.)

any ideas!?

I love proper names for horses especially if it reminds you of someone you know

BTW my OH was much happier with me getting a new horse after I let him name it.... (of course I spoonfed him the shortlist of names I'd picked in the first place )

If I ever got the chance to name a horse (I would change a horses name unless it was REALLY awful!!) I have always liked Harlequin. I also like Rupert for a horse.
Why not hire a babies name book froma library!!

ahh he doesnt have a name! poor old thing.

He has proper name but nothing you could make a nice stable name out off.

I wouldnt rename a horse as im old fashioned and too scared of the bad luck! lol

You need to imagine calling it out across the field - how does it sound when you're cross? - how does it sound when you're talking sweetly to him?

I like George - I used to know a lovely honest horse called George.

Carruthers - I feel - is a bit of a mouthful when calling it across a field?

ahh see thats the issue i had with carruthers! I think its a mouthful for daily use.

I like george cos my grandfather is a crazy old country man who was very sharp and always shooting at people! lol It makes me think of a strong wild man! hehe.

Id rather not say his full name as i dont own the horse at moment and news travels fast on the world wide web..... dont wanna look like a total looser to the owners hehehe.

hes a very good looking grey german horsey, if that helps..... whos very brave but a bit softy as well.

Sounds like my kinda horse! I always think of greys as storm, blue, mist - we have a grey cat willow or our grey pony is tinker (we didn't name him)!

I like George though as it and he sound noble!

Thanks, she gets a lot of laughs, bless her she came with the name and it only suits her because it doesn't if that makes sense.

It sounds like you have decided on George - which is a lovely horse name. However I think that if I got to name one I'd call it something more strange... I had a pony called Pumpkin and that was cool... Probably something like 'Doodle' or 'Critter' or 'Bugsy' or something... But I guess those some of 'nickname'ey names probably come after having a horse a while.

I did once know a horse called 'Fish'... daft name for a horse.

I met a horse called Benson the other day.. loveeee that name.. but i cant steal it!

I think if you are converting a big german horses to English it has to be Winston....
I love that name.... then again i did call my section d stallion HUMPHREY!!

Yeh I like the idea of naming it after a grand parent or something. And i like proper human names. Horse is called Josie, her foal was Norah and my cat is Audrey. OH's cats are Ernie & Roy.

i love really old names , or names of old men!!! Winston is a great name!! Thats def on my short list!

At the riding school i work at we have a lovely baby horse called Ernie. Hes a cracker!

I love Hector, it makes me picture a big safe grey hunter with a roman nose

I only have mares, but my friends gelding is called Friday (Vendredi when he is naughty), also a girl at my yard has bought a nice cob called Archie, or Archibald

At my work we have a Buddy, Bertie, Butler, Big Ernie, Alfie which I think are good easy short names.

My last loan gelding was called Solly, which was quite funny after having 2 loan mares called Polly and Holly.
