hey guys :)

just wondering do in the winter do you put neck covers on in the stable ?

my boy has one in the field but not at night in stable ?

do you think i should get him a neck rug ?

he will have all his neck clipped of.

last winter he was in barn style stables so no wind, but this year he is in more open stables?

thanks :D

Personally anywhere that I am clipping I will be rugging so I'd go for a neck. If you were not clipping the neck I wouldn't both with a neck on my stable rug!

I have two different weight under rugs with full necks along with a full set of stable rugs without necks and a thermatex head and neck cover.

I think it makes them more versatile, I mix and match depending on the temp!

Depends entirely on the horse.

I very rarely have a horse in work over the winter without clipping their neck. My gang have neck covers with their turnout rugs, but it is rare that I use a neck cover in the stable. My horses are kept plenty warm enough, and they all seem to appreciate having a time out from having their necks covered up, so they can have a good rub and itch :)

If any of mine are feeling the cold at any time tho, I will put their neck covers back on in the stable. They had them on during the cold snap & snow we had last winter for example

I hunter clip both of mine and always turn them out with a neck cover, but in the stable they don't wear one unless it is minus temperatures.

Mine are outdoor stables and not particularly sheltered but I find mine too hot if I cover their necks whilst in - even in the freezing snowy weather we had last winter one of mine was too hot in the mornings with a 360g rug with neck cover - and she is 7/8ths TB :)

yep i would deffo go for a neckmy pony was unclipped last year and had a neck on and will deffo have one on when he is clipped
you can always fold it back if he gets hot

i rarely put a neck on in stable but always on outside. although when if fully clipped (not this year) i always but a duvet(normal bed one) on them so it goes a bit up neck but not fully!! when inside its nice to give them some freedom as they are quite sheltered really compared to outside, but judge it once clipped if cold in mornings buy a neck if not dont bother!!

Reading a few of the other replies I thought I'd add to mine... I would make sure I own the neck for the stable rug and use it as appropriate based on your type of horse / clip / outside temperature etc. It is quite mild at the moment so my lad only has a stable sheet on. I'll then move up to his 200g stable rug with neck (he is a skinny WB but depending on the type of your horse, you could leave the neck off at first). I will then keep an underblanket with neck which I will reserve for the very coldest nights!
As some of the other posts allude to, the more versatile your rugs the better!
