My yard is full in that all the stables in the courtyard are occupied. I do have another stable outside the courtyard which is twenty metres away from the others but four of the other stables can easily be seen from it. It is a brand new quality 18 x 12 stable with rubber matting etc, and a rear window that looks out onto the sand turnout (where horses are out all day in winter) and the arena. A horse could touch noses through the bars of the window.

So my question is, if the right horse came along (I'm not looking and haven't put it past the OH yet :o) how many horses would be expected to settle happily in this situation? Obviously, it would be turned out with others. I did have the cob here in there for a few weeks when he sat on his water drinker in his own stable, and he was really chilled, but he is a very independent sort. I am used to horses being immediately next to others with talk bars.

For those that don't know, I have five liveries and two of my own horses, but one of mine is completely broken and a gorgeous field ornament, the other has been retired due to injury for 3 years but I have started riding her again. However, she has cushings and is always teetering on the edge of a lami attack so I do not know if she will ever be able to come back into proper work, even though she loves it!

What are others views on this? Thanks.

One of mine is just this type of stable he can see no horses at all when stabled .
He's fine he is also turned out alone (because he's seriously not to be trusted)
This one is better in that stable he's bargey stroppy and difficult on the top yard . , but I do think perhaps not every horse would settle to it.

You are right. I know my own mare would hate it. I would have to be very careful what type of horse I got. Three of the ones here would be fine. I won't move them though as it wouldn't be fair.

I have one box set away from the others, not as far as yours but still a limited view of the others, I use it regularly as it is huge, most are very happy in it only the odd horse has not settled without being in close contact to its friends.

Thank you. That is reassuring. I guess you just have to make sure the horse is quite a confident and independent sort.

My horse will be stabled on his own at the yard I'm hoping to move to. The other horses live out in the fields down the lane about 20metres away so he wouldn't be able to see them. I'm not sure how he'd settle but only one way to find out!
As the others have said, some horses would be fine, others wouldn't. I think most of it depends on where they come from - a big, busy yard, they're less likely to settle.

Mine would love this, but she does like her own space. She's getting older now though. We had another mare of advancing years who was the same, could take or leave company. Maybe it would appeal to someone with an older horse? Sounds a lovely big box.

My horse would be quite happy with that set up. I have two stables in a seperate barn on the DIY yard I am on and my cob is perfectly happy being in his stable on his own (cant see others), however my daughters horse would go crazy if he was in on his own. It would depend on the horse.

My horse is just the same - doesn't even bother looking up when I take his only other field companion away to exercise. Tbh I truly think he likes his own space, he's never been a clingy type. He's also an older horse like some of the others mentioned so maybe something similar would fit in nicely.

Thank you. It is something I hadn't even considered before, and then I started to think that maybe I was being too inflexible. If I found the right horse, things might just work out.

At a previous yard we had one stable that was around the corner from the others on the yard - horses in question that were put in there didn't seem to mind. However, they were turned out in company all day, every day.

Your stable doesn't sound as isolated as that - so I wouldn't have a problem stabling in it.
