I like having a grill but not a big one so you can cover it up if you have a grumpy horse! Mine would kick the walls through when she's in season if she could see the other horses (surrounded by geldings), but then my friend's horse has wooden bars between her and her friend and Cracks is the grumpiest moo every but gets on with Petal well. Their doors are literally right next to one another as well, they only fight occasionally. I'm sure it would help stop vices though!

It is good to have half partitions for socialising, however if you have a grumpy horse then perhaps full partitions are better. Also if a horse has illness etc maybe easier to confine if they can not touch noses etc?

At the old yard they had full partitions, didn't really like them though. Now they have full grills so they can sniff, but not take chunks out each other (or eat another horsies haynet!)

Ive been on a yard before where they've had bord all the way up but have a small grill put in the middle. I liked this idea as the horses can see each other if the wish but still have their own space if they dont want to socialise.

I've only ever had half partition and half grill until the last 18 months. As mine are in a converted barn there is only the half partition now and no grill. Both of mine love it and can often be seen grooming each other over it.

I'd go for half grill, half board in most stables, but keep a few with full board for those grumpy horses who simply won't socialise. That way, clients have a choice.

I like half and half but prefer it when there is about five foot boarded off on either side where mangers/hayracks are, that way they don't feel threatened by a grumpy neighbour when they're trying to eat; get less colicky type problems then cos they're not in such a hurry to bolt it down. I've also found cribbing etc doesn't seem such a problem if they can see everybody and what's going on.

I like half grill - I have half board in one of my boxes atm but one horse keeps taking chunks out of the other. Getting a grill put up asap though

Definitely full boards although a small area of talk bars is nice.

With full width bars some horses get very possessive around feed time and will kick the sh*t out of the walls.

I prefer half walls myself, but I've known some horses that hate it and feel threatened and crowded, depends on the individual horse I suppose. If I had the money and was doing it from scratch I think I'd have a solid part at the back where horses could have their "privacy" if they wanted it.
I am just doing my barn and the stables had full partitions (up to about 8' high) we've cut the partitions down to about 5'6" mainly to let some light in because the barn is quite dark, I've ripped all the front grills down and at the moment all the fronts are half height. If I have problems I'll put up a few grills but I'll wait and see what the horses prefer. The only stall which has a full partition wall is the one where the goats live. I suppose we could have torn the whole lot down and put in pristine new stalls but we're just making do with what we have here for now, saving my money for buying animals instead.
