I am currently in the process of turning a barn into 2 stables and need some help. I am planning on having 2 14x14 stables at each end of the barn with a 14 ft gap in the middle for storage, doors to the stables internally off the storage area and windows in each stable to the outside.

I have liked the idea of having the stables quite open, the stable wall to the partition area I have thought about having at 5ft, some people have said the horse will jump out? What is everyone's thoughts?

I do not have a horse at the moment but plan on getting something between 14.2 and 15.3.

Personally, I would prefer at least mesh or a grill on top of the wall even if you leave the stable door at 5 ft. It will give you added safety without taking the lightness away and not only that, it will give you more options for your storage bit so that anything higher than the wall doesn't get pulled into the stable by a nosey horse. Also, you never know but you might need a third box at some point so that with the mesh already there, you wouldn't have to do anything else in an emergency. Mesh is better than bars IMHO, no chance of hooves getting stuck in them which I've known happen both from a rolling horse and one just having a buck in the box.

My current partitions are not quite 5'. I've mainly had under 15hh in there and not had an issue. I had a 14hh pony that would jump her own stable door but never had one go over a partition. I'm going to be building new stables this year (with a bit of luck) and I'm planning on having the block walls a similar height with nothing on the top.

As the poster above says, also depends what you are going to store there and if you don't want the horse to be able to reach it.

Thanks both, i have been thinking of putting bars or mesh for the first 4ft to save the storage area sounds like mesh would be best. Also been thinking of leaving the sides at 5ft high then when I get a pony/horse see what they are like if I need bars/mesh. I would love to hear more opinions any welcome

Sounds good!! Nice big boxes!
I'm presuming you're horses will be less naughty than the ones I seem to end up with!! However, from my point of view, 5' partitions would mean my horse was out (or half out!)!! Granted my lot are bigger than the one you're thinking of getting but I would still be nervous! All I can say is what if you get your horse & presumably a friend for it - you take one or the other out for a ride or something & the one left decides to have a tantrum because it's on it's own....... I'd rather know that they're safe & can't get out than spend the whole ride worrying!! I go by the theory that anything you think they "might" do, they tend to do!!!
Do I sound pessimistic.....sorry - years of high maintenance nags!! May you be blessed with enjoyable horses!! :D
