hey guys sorry last post about rugs! i dont know wether to buy a stable rug or not! or to use the t/o rug in the stable? cos in effect would mean she needs 6 rugs! thanks

I Prefer having stable rugs, turns outs would be fine but i always think what if they come in from the field wet and cold under the rug, its nicer for them to have something dry and cosy to wear IMO anyway:p x

I don't have stable rugs as I find if you take a wet rug off the horse, it takes forever to dry (obviously I would change it if the horse was wet underneath the rug though!) x

I would be happy using either to be honest but my boy does have stable rugs (I am a major rugaholic though!!!:o)

Yes it is nicer for them to wear a lovely dry rug in the stable but to put a damp wet one on again in the morning isn't very nice.... depends whether you think the turnout rug will dry out in time, perhaps?

I would buy one anyway :D (sorry not much help!:p)

I have them, but mainly as backups to go under turnouts if it's really cold! Although both of mine got cast off duvets this year and do look rather cosy in them when they are in :D

I tend to use T/O's in the stable useless they are soaked through during the week to save me time in a morning, I have atleast one of each weight for T/O if not 2. Then they have a m/w and h/w stable rug for weekends when I put them on. I'm a self confessed a rug junkie and my mare has a good selection but then we have been together for 22 years now, the boys are slowly catching up lol. :)
I have 2 T/ and 1 ISH.

My stable rugs have all never been used since horses now at home. Modern turnouts are so good now and they dry so well on the horse so wouldn't bother unless on box rest. Only exception is when I leave a cooler wicking rug on after exercise if I've had an evening lesson

Even if you use TO's indoors and out a couple of stable rugs are always useful.:)

For sick/box rested horses for a start.

I use both on my horse. but I have to say if I'm doing favours for friends some mornings I leave her T/O rug on to save time and also when wet as it helps dry the rug so she has a dry rug for morning. but do change if she wet underneath.

I would buy stable rugs as I they are handy if boxrested and I like to see them in comfy cozy stable rugs of a evening.

Buy buy buy!

I love horse clothes shopping - more than buying clothes for myself! I sometimes changed turnout rug for overnight so a friend can turnout in the morning easily. I do like having multiple rugs though....!

Always good to have spare rugs in case they get wet / broken etc. I am lucky as I have "inherited" loads of rugs from my sister who has emmigrated. My horse really feels the cold though, today she has a two turnouts on, one of which has a liner underneath. She had a fleece and two m/w stable rugs on last night. If she is cold she REALLY lets you know about it!

If you can't afford new, have a look on eBay / Preloved etc for cheaper secondhand ones.

I have stable rugs however I only really use them as underugs nowadays. If you're worried about money have. Look on eBay I bought a really nice heavyweight TO 2 yes ago by rhinegold that has been amazing. I then bought a heavyweight stable rug that was rubbish and have hardly used. Also bought a weatherbeeta stable rug last year that hasn't been out of the bag! I'm obsessed with rug shopping but have had to rein myself in as it gets too expensive! So to save money and time invest in TO and get a couple of cheaper stable rugs that you can use for layering.

well i can get h/w (with neck) lw both t/o, 280gm blanket fleece, so use as mw stable, with the l/w stable to make h/w and put it under l/w t/o to make mw t/o and a fleece cooler for about £180ish does that sound good?

I think that many people do ok with just turnout rugs but my worry would be that leaving it on to dry would with some owners turn into leaving it on without taking it off and checking for any problems with the horse; also any rubbing patches would never get a rest as they would if you changed to a different rug with different shaping/padding.

So I am a fan of separate stable rugs.

I keep my turnout rugs on especially when when they're wet as they then dry on the horse. When everyone else is putting wet rugs on in the morning, mine are nice and dry!
Also if they keep the rug on they don't have to have a cold one put on in the morning. Take this morning for instance, all I did was take off the fleece underblanket and turn my horse out in the field and she didn't have to have a cold rug put on her clipped skin!

I have stable rugs as well for my lot and Im very glad I do! If their rugs are wet on the outside I try to leave them on as long as possible while I do other jobs to help dry them then put them on a rug rack inside out. If you put them out to dry with the damp side out I find the inside gets wet/damp!

I had a really busy period for a week and a bit and so left them in their t/os whenever they were warm enough (another point through winter they often need a warmer rug on anyway overnight). Their rugs were disgusting! Poo stains all over them as well as the mud, they went all 'crispy' & horrid yuck! and one of mine even managed to break the attachments on his neck rug in the stable
:(. They now need to go to be washed (and mended). The rugs were all meant to be 'dual purpose' but I still wont be doing that again unless Im forced to!

The rugs I really like are my PE ones: the liner system is fab as it means if same weight needed day to night I can whip off her outer turnout leaving the liner on and throw the stable outer on top :). The turnout rug also airs pretty quickly and is very rarely still damp on the outside in the morning. The liners are fab, easily washable, and I even use them under my other brand rugs :). Defo a set up I would recommend :D

As a side note if you do decide to get stable rugs two of the best value for money rugs I have are belmont combos. Mine have gone through 3 and 4 hard winters of use now and aside from one needing minor stitching they are still going strong :). They do come up HUGE though so buy a size down! I wont buy any more as Im hoping to eventually swap all my rugs to PE ones, but they are great rugs :).

well if your horse comes in wet and cold under the nz i think you need a new NZ rug

or it reproofed

if he is cold under the NZ you should put a heavier weight on or under rug underneath

yes thats true but in my experience rugs dry better on the horse, so nice dry stable rug at night cold wet nz to wear all day outside. water soaks into the rug thus the underside gets wet.

nz advantages

1 only need one rug
2 rug dries on horse withing 2 hours,
4 only one rug to wash in spring
5 cheaper with one rug
6 poo stains dont get through to the horse specially if you have a grey
7 horse goes out in morning in a warm rug keeping heat with him in field

stable rugs

advantage

1 they have for the night a dry rug

speeks for itself:D

3 of my liveries want them changed at night all 3 go out in morning with a cold - wet- heavy- sometimes rigid frozen stiff NZ
the rest are cosy and warm :)

I have as many stable rugs as turnouts in varying styles and weights. Like to know they're all cosy and warm!! Also I think if rugs are being taken off anyway to check bodies, just as easy to change to stable rug. I do keep them in turnouts though if they're soaking wet as they dry quicker despite having heater in tack room!

Interesting thread.

I have normally been in the stable rug camp but the last couple of nights I have been leaving my boys NZ on as it has been very fresh and didn't want to take off his toasty rug to put on a cold stable one

I did worry about him not feeling any benefit from the rug as he had had it on all day and the night was getting colder but don't think it made much of a difference.

Never thought about rugs drying quicker on the horse, have always wanted to get the wet rug off and put a nice dry one on him. I do have a couple of rugs to play with though so when one comes in wet it gets hung on the rug rack and a dry one used while the wet one drys out.

I second that, Weatherbeeta Belmont Combos are the best. And yes, they do come up big!

Interesting thread but as far as I can see no-one has made the comment pro-stable rugs that changing them means the rug you take off can "air". I certainly would not want a horse in the same rug all the time. Would you wear the same clothes night and day for weeks? Yuck. I have been guilty of leaving a wet T/O on overnight so it can dry but I also have spare rugs so that I don't have to put a still-wet one back on in the morning but then I'm a bit anal about clean kit and wash stuff all the time as I can't bear kit smelling "horsey"!!

Ok i know im obsessed with rugs but on the days when im not in work he always has a stable rug as i ride in the morning so doesn’t matter about being cold changing rugs etc, in the week he has a turnout, if its been raining and is wet then i hang it up to dry and replace with a new dry t/o, and repeat each time its raining, he has several h/w t/o to choose from...obsessed i know

^^^THIS! Also I always brush or ride the horse every night so he always has a t/o off, replaced with a thermatex then after i feed he has either his stable or other t/o back on

I have the PE buster trio. Turnout is on in the stable and out in the field. Various liners go inside depending on what weight you need. The liners are small enough to go in the washing machine, so they get washed regularly and horse always has a clean rug against its skin. Rug is always dry as it dires on horse and horse never gets a cold rug put on them. She is ridden every morning and groomed every evening so has rug off twice a day. I have 1 thermatex type rug and a fly rug, but that is it other than the buster trio!
