ok: my horse only just started living in stable so need some advice. She has two stable rugs, but she gets them really skanky quickly and although I rotate and clean - does anyone else have this problem? Otherwise it seems I'll be spendin a fortune on cleanin! Also I am looking for a new one as one is ripped and wondered if anyone could reccommend a nice cosy one ?

I have a mare who is very dirty in her stable and I keep her in her NZ. At least you can hose it off if it gets really gross! I found stable rugs too absorbant!

I leave my turnout rugs on in the stable, don't get as dirty and smelly as the stable rugs and a lot quicker in the mornings not having to change rugs!

My mare lives in a pit... she wees for England which makes everything mushy, then she lays in it all! And she's grey! But I've found the Weatherbeeta rugs to be good for keeping the muck on the outside... I have a Masta which is useless, she wore it once and it got soaked in pee and now stinks! I can't afford to clean it yet though! I would use turnout rugs but don't like to as then they need washing more, which un-waterproofs them. The Rambo and Fal stable rugs seem to be good as well, although I don't have any. Oh, and the Mark Todd ones seem to be similar to the Weatherbeeta on the outside, they keep the wet out well.
I am a rug queen!

How about putting a cotton summer sheet over the rug - i.e. something that can go in the washing machine once a week?

They dont get hot in their turnout rugs because if you think about it, they're standing about in their stable so it can be very chilly! Outside at least they walk about etc. to keep warm. I rug up as much in the stable as out.

Another one for leaving the turnouts on

I think stable rugs are a waste of money. To save on cleaning you can use a summer sheet underneath and bung it in the washing machine to keep the inside of the rug nice and fresh.

I swapped one from a 400g combo to a 300g no neck rug today as the poor fella was sweating buckets with the warm weather today. Mine are always slightly warmer at night due to being in no wind compared to outside (windy farm though!).

Im another convert to wearing NZ's in the stable, they all seem happy and if you can bear to see them caked in mud in their stable which i am slowly coming round to, it is a whole lot easier and cleaner for you and saves you time and money keeping rugs clean... no more urine soaked stable rugs!! Bliss!!

I use good qua;ity, breathable turnout rugs in the stable. My horse gets covered in crap and you can just wipe it off. Good luck!!

!Some use the stable rugs that have a tough outer, like a turnout, which works well.
