Hi everyone,

Do we have any stable run experts/authorities/fans? I have a few horses who have proven themselves... suspect... with unsupervised turnout. This is something I will keep working on with them, but in the meantime, I wonder if run outs might be a good option for them.

Has anyone any experience with these on an external stall/stable block situation? My stalls are in one row, backed up to a wall, so there's only a front entrance for each one. To access each horse, I would potentially have to enter through the stable run. Has anyone done this? I can only find examples of run outs off of internal or American-style barns where each stall has a front and back door.

What kind of footing is standard? I live in Ireland where it's frequently wet and often windy. I am thinking of making them small, so it would be something like 3.6m x 7.2m or 3.6 x 10m, with the first 2m under an overhang. I have a hardcore base in front of the stalls, so am considering leveling it, putting a layer of stone dust, and then either finishing with sand or wood chip. Think I can get away with something like this without membrane and/or drainage?

Fencing: I have seen a lot of steel or metal tubing used for these. I was thinking something more like timber posts and either electrical rope/wrapped wire or flexible rail. Am I missing something with this? ie why is steel so popular?

What about particularly athletic or silly horses? Anyone found this to be a problem with stable run outs? Mine are very happy to jump over paddock fencing when it suits them, as well as tearing around with reckless abandon. But they are generally very well behaved in stall. I am hoping it follows that since these will be quite small, they will treat them more as stall extensions and less as exercise pens. Is that naive?

I would love to hear about any ideas or experience any of y'all have. Thanks :)
