stable size for a mini?

am going to be building a 2nd stable next to my mare's for my mini shetland... whom i got on loan in jan and have now bought Im going to have to have somewhere to get her in off the grass She is about 34 inches. So what would the ideal size be? I know the bigger the better but she is swamped in my existing stable which is 10x12 and i want to keep expense down. How does 7x7 sound with a 3ft door?

Am sure that would be fine.
I used to have one of my 12 x 12's divided into 2 with proper half partition, fine for small ones overnight, even had 12.2's using them when weather really bad.

My 33 inch Tiny Fuzzy has the luxury of a 10 x 12 with full rubber matting (and a top door cut down to use as a bottom door) - and she can almost manage a canter in there if having a paddy (and she loves the 12 x 12's!)
You still want height tho to manage to do the chores in there yourself & provide good airflow, so dont be tempted to have roof too low.

Are you tacking it onto an existing one? Only asking, as if you can afford it, then go for as big as you can & then you can always take off a corner inside for storage - I keep a hurdle in my little'ns stable across a corner & we can keep spare stuff behind it when needed.

We have a 9x9 box on our yard that previously had a mini in with loads of room, now has a pony of 12- 12.2 in which seems to have room to lie flat out in. Could you mark it out round the mini when lay down to get an idea of size? Though saying that 12x12 is the standard for a 16.2 so 7x7 should be fine.

hehee, yeh thats exactly what i did earlier to come up with 7x7,mini was most suspcious of the tape measure

thanks furryfuzzy, no i wont be tacking onto exsisiting stable, was going to do an L shape so they can see each other. Am hoping a 3ft door is ok as any lower im worried she would climb over it ,although at 3ft she will have to crane her neck t see out, wee terror

Our mini had a 3' door but top foot was like a gate with wooden posts across so he could see through it. Just make sure the gaps are small enough for even a mini hoof not to fit in. Daughters 11.1 now has a larger version so she can see out easily.

My mini is in a 10 X 8. We had a low door made so she could see over and she jumped it. We now have a grill so she can still see out..

My 11.2 is happily living in a 8x9, so for a mini, i guess that would be fine!

I would go for a 12x12 and put a temporary partition in. That way in case you ever wanted/needed the 2nd stable for a bigger horse the partition could come out and a bigger horse could still fit. You could always use the extra room for storage

Also if you ever came to sell you land and stables, 2 big stables are much more saleable that 1 and a half

Standard ply sheets are 8' long so 8x8 is a cheaper option than 8x9 and probably about the same as a 7x7.

8 x 8 is plenty big enough.

My pair share a 10' x 11', or a 20' x 11', or a 10' x 8' depends what is empty at the time.

Before now I have had them in the goat pens, 10 x 5'6" plenty of room still for them to turn around in and sleep. (Mine are 32" and 36")

Make it into a respectable lean to or shed then and it will be just as useful for storage should you ever not need it, have you considered looking in your local papers etc for wooden garden sheds? There may be something cheap there.
