What would you say is the minimum sized stable you would put a 18hh in purely just for interest also what would you say is the ideal sized stable for a 18hh horse, and finally any big horse owners what size stable is your horse in?! Thanks

Depends on the horses build, also partition height. A long backed 18hh horse in a typical loose box will have far less room than a short backed one in a box with low partitions that its head & neck can overhang. Also horses age & length of time in it. As a rule, however much space it needed to be able to lie flat on its side without hitting a wall. My very long backed 17.2 was in a 16x 16, tbh unless it was a very short term measure & even then overnight only, I wouldn't have wanted him in anything smaller than 14x14.

My horses have 15 x 15 stables onemof mine is 17.3hh he is in 7.3 rugs and has a giraffe neck he fits fine plenty of room to move and lay down etc.

Yard previously stables were 11 x 11 and again he managed, was only in overnight.

My 16.3hh is in 13.6 x16 ft at has plenty of room then lots of work horses eg Calvery have stalls and obviously manage fine but they do get very regular exercise.

We have 2 17.3's on the yard and they are in the biggest stables here which are 16x18. We have got some other 17hh's who are slighter builds in 14x16's and 14x14's and they all have plenty of room but all the stable blocks have extremely high roofs which I think helps.

My Dad has always said you can put a small horse in a large stable but you can't put a large horse in a small stable so we have always constructed the stables based on size rather than quantity.

For an 18hh I would think you would want a minimum of 14x16 with good height to the roof so the horse felt comfortable not just so they fit.

Thanks guys my 18hh hano is currently in a standard 12x12 with good height roof but I'm not particularly happy about the size tbh I have asked yard to move him to another large size stable but they won't listen unfortunately and he has had to be on box rest due to an abscess and has ended up bashing his leg he is able to lie down etc but I just don't think it is anywhere big enough just wanted to get a few opinions as I don't want to moan unnessarily thanks!!

My 17 hander used to be in a 12 x 12 at a livery yard and his stable was always a mess. When we built our own we made his 16x12 and he is lots less messy and happier- he has lots more head height too as it is a mini barn design and portal framed. His poo palace is very comfy!!!

Our 17.3hh takes a 7' rug and is in my biggest box at 14' x14'. He is fine in it,but I would not put him in my smaller 12' x 12' boxes. They would confine him quite a lot,and I would be concerned he may get cast.
I don't suppose moving yard is an option if your YO can't or won't move him?
