Stable size

I have a small stable slightly over 8 foot squared and around 8 foot high.. we only have ponies 2 of which are over 15 years old and I’m thinking they could defo do with getting out the cold for a few hours during the winter.. our eldest mare is only a little section A pony 11.2hh she suffers with arthritis and during the winter was going to stable her in there over night..our biggest pony is 13.1. Do you think she would be okay stabled in there for say 4-5 hours during the morning or afternoon? Just to get out the bad weather and have a bit of peace from the herd? They mostly live out but think it’s be nice for the older ones to have some warm stable time..

I think it would be ok. Obviously her arthritis would be a problem if she was in overnight, but for short periods she should be fine. My Welsh A had a stable of that size, although she normally lives out too.

I think its OK for short periods you might find they will rather be out though.

Thank you. Yes it will never be for long periods 3-5 hours max I was thinking .. I do plan on getting a new stable block eventually but with how things are with the costs of thing rising it will have to wait a bit longer.

I think that will be fine .
I am a big believer in respite inside for those who live out in winter .

Probably telling you what you already know but some of the oldies do far worse in as they're standing still, especially with arthritis. I think it's possibly more an anthropomorphising thing to want them in when it's cold.

I was converted to 24/7 turnout by my old boy. I got handed him back from loan on a couple of bute a day, legs filling and struggling to stay sound. He's now like a youngster again living out 24/7 and only on a joint supplement.

You'll know your ponies though and what works for some might not work for others, yours might be delighted to be in but don't feel like because they're on the older side they have to come in and over 15 isn't that old
