stable size

Hi,

thinking of moving my mare to a new yard but the stable available is 12 f x 12 f. the ayrd she is currently in she has a 16 fx 16 f stable. just wondering if people thought the smaller stable would be big enough for. She is 16h3 ISH.

Any commenst would be great.

umm, i think she'll probably manage, as a lot of big horses are in stables that size, although personally i prefer them to be in larger stables.
if she's the sort who gets cast a lot, i'd probably rethink though.

Thanks for that. i ahve only owned her size last feb and she was always stabled in the bigger stable so she has never had cast that I know of - thats not to say that she wouldn't if she was in a smaller stable. She is just she a big girl, I would hate to think that moving her would mean that she has any traumatic experience!

i think as long as it's a nice warm stable with no draughts, 12x12 is fine... my 16.3 mare was in a stable that size for years, with no problems.
the temporary stables at events are often 9'x9', sometimes 10'x10', and even big horses seem to cope, for the most part.

Beau is 17.3hh and in an 11ft x 11ft stable.

no one could ever accuse my mare of being "nimble" sso I hope sshe will be OK. Everything else in the yard is perfect.

The stables at my yard are 12 x 12, Ali is 16.1hh and is happy in them

Jerry is 17.1hh and he is in a 12 x 12 stable. he is fine with it!

I honestly think that if the yard atmosphere, turnout, management regimes, feed, exercise and riding is right, plus horses and owners are happy, the horses pick up on that and settle well. My horse has just moved to a slightly smaller stable - 12 x 12 - but it is in a barn that houses 10 stables under the one roof - there are no bars and the feeling is of one big open happy space (obviously, provided horsey friends are next door to each other). The atmosphere is immediately horse-friendly and my boy snuggled down into his lush shavings for a nap inside 15 minutes flat. He doesn't lay down unless he feels very safe. I think if the yard is right and everything else works for both you and your horse, she'll be fine! Good luck x

jay is only happy in big stables but he is quite claustrophobic , my old girl is in a 12 x 14 & she is happy, she is 16.1hh
