Have found a prospective new yard for my horse but the stable measures 9.5ft x 16ft. Does this sound ok for a 15.2hh horse? Her current stable is 12ft x 14ft so just worrying that this might be a bit small?

Also the roof is pretty low, just under 7ft.

Any thoughts gratefully received as I am due to move in this weekend!

Thanks in advance

The standard size of a stable is 12 x 12, this stable sounds a little narrow and he might get cast. As for the roof only being 7foot, too low in my humble opinion and the vent for air circulation does not sound good.

It sounds an odd size for you guys living in the UK, but over here lots of people keep bigger horses in far smaller stables.

My own stables are only 10 X 12, 7ft to trusses (although 10ft to ridge) and every single person who comes comments on how big they are

. I used to think they were tiny as mine in the UK were 14 X 16, however I am used to them now and compared to everyone else's around here mine are big.

Your horse will be fine so I wouldn't worry.

Should have said 7ft is the measurment to the lowest part of the beams, the actual roof is probably another foot and a half higher.

The horse that has just left was 16hh and apparently that was fine in there.

Just worry as her current stable is quite a bit bigger.

Nothing wrong with those measurements I am sure your horse will be fine.

I have to agree with Tia.
I was stunned when I was looking around for horses at what I, in my BHS/PC indoctrinated mind, thought were tiny stalls. Great beefy 16+h Quarter Horses in spaces I would have thought twice about putting a pony into. When one of the horses was delivered the seller was amazed at how big my stalls were (10'x11' nothing to do with me, that's what was there) and said that 9'x9' was normal and was what he had built in his barn.
Horse keeping here is sooooooo different.

The roof sounds alittle low to me, I cant imagine the stable having good air circulation or even good natural light, is it a converted cowshed or something?

The size sounds ok though, just the height that would concern me. Mind you Im a bit cluastrophobic!

My 15.3hh Cob was in a 10ftx12ft stable till a bigger one became available (about 5 months), it wasn't ideal coz she was alway lying in poo, but she managed fine and seemed quite happy (she has a bigger stable now and there is a 16.3hh in her old stable

but he seems fine too). Is this permenant or a temporary measure?

My 16hh mare was in a stable that was 12 x 14 but the roof beams were only 7.5ft and when tugging on her haynet she did ocassionaly hit them

Its an old farm yard with traditional type stables. They are all the same size, ie about 10 x 16, but some of the stables have low roofs whilst the other stables have normal height roofs.

It did seem pretty light and airy so not too worried about that aspect.

The only empty stable does have the low roof but if another stable with a higher roof becomes vacant she could move into one of those.
