I recently got one of those 12-sided stable toy balls with a hole in that you put treats in and my mare absolutely loves hers. I am currently filling it with her feed pony nuts, but she is finishing it in a couple of minutes. What does everyone else put in their treat ball? Any ideas would be helpful!! Thank you! :p

OK, here's what I put in mine. My horses don't get theirs every day, but read on:

Dried Apple chunks, chopped carrots, organic bread croutons (which I make in the oven) grass pellets, chopped parsnips, dried peppermint leaves (collect in the summer).

They aren't in very often, but they get Simple System Feeds Meadow Brix and Lucie Brix.

And apples bobbing in their water bucket is quite good.

I also give small branches of ash or willow, and sometimes gather grasses and other herbs from the roadsides - just make sure there is nothing toxic in there.

I also double net haynets in small holed nets.

They love these and it isn't the same every day, so lots of variety.

Have you tried the Likit range of toys - they are great fun for horses although, sometimes they are gone quite quickly....

In their hay portion or net hide some treats inside for them to find

Get a sweed (not sure if this is how you spell it but this is how you say it - just ask for one at the supermarket) and cut a hole inside it then stick a length of rope inside then hang it from the horses stable and they normally enjoy this one! You can also cover it in molasses for more sticky fun!!

We cut the carrots into chunks and if you fill it quite full (small one) it takes them ages to empty it. Needless to say they don't get it filled every day!

The boredom buster is also fantastic. I'd tried all the others they had out but my 'little treasures' managed to suss them out and have the likits out of them within 30 mins. Not this one. Now the likits last for days and sometimes a whole week :D

I think it is worth being a bit mean with Likits. Yes horses do seem to love them, but the flavours are definately marketed to human tastes and they contain a lot of molasses/sugars. Sadly many horses (as do humans) have a sugar intolerance.

A sugar intolerance can manifest itself as itching, being hyper, being very dull, full of energy one minute, down and lazy the next, aggression, depression . . . to name but a few.

But aren't our horses lucky - many get nothing all day.

my boy has a bog standard space hopper that he flings about! no food in it just a big rubber ball with horns ontop.

:) also hurts less when he flings it out over the door unlike the treat ball!!!

We've got one in with the foal... It's got a loop type handle rather than the horns though...

He loves kicking it about or mouthing around it to grab the handle and carry/throw it... With varying degrees of success it has to be said... :D
