Make sure you have decent lighting and at least one power point safely placed away from the neds, either in a spare box or where you can clip, use vet scanners and the like without long extensions. Have seen yards with a shower boom in the wash box and I would certainly want one of those if mine were riding horses, so much quicker and economical compared to buckets! I love our automatic water bowls but some people don't, they're a boon to me with a bad back. If you're using buckets, I thoroughly recommend the 'D shaped' ones you hang on the wall at chest height, no more kicked over buckets and dry beds, wouldn't have been without them with the youngsters! Have you got hayracks/bars or will it be nets, in which case you need at least two tie rings to each box, one as high as possible (try to position them so the horse's backside can be towards any draught there may be, even in a corner for the haynet?) If you're using mangers think about where to place them, haynets and waterbowls/buckets; no good if the horse poops in either of them when standing munching.
Our wooden boxes only have solid windows but they are quite high, the partitions are only 7foot high (so not to the top) and the top doors aren't shut except in special circumstances so not a problem with ventilation (it's also enabled me to place fittings out of draughts easier with no opening window to take into account. If I had opening windows, I would want ones that opened at the top, not sliding ones, that way any draught is taken up over the horse's back and rain/snow can't get blown in.
Hope that's given you some ideas - how exciting planning new boxes, I had a ball doing ours (though I was governed by finances to a certain degree!

Will you show us pics when they're finished?

I will def have pics! I agree with the windows, i have hay on the ground so the horses are stretching etc. Also i did consider auto water but again i like them stretching to ground and no one knocks them abot (use the big buckets) plus keeps my arms toned! LOL
Have yours got an over hang as we have an over hang on our present stables but not enough out for horse to stand under and not get wet, i think it about 1.2 so i really want one that long enough out to have horse under but sheltered from weather!
Check this link out becuase this is the desgin we are copying and same colour as well but window will be the outside of the stable so on the left side (end)

its the stable block at the bottom left (black and white)

what size are your stables? we have 12x12 right now and i think they are too small i was hoping for 16 x 12

I had my stables built last year and chose the "louvred" vented windows. TBH I havent ever fitted the perspex in them as the back of the stable block is to the wind and so it is very sheltered and I like the fact that they are well ventilated. Might get round to it this winter, what with the weather today! I also have an overhang 1.3m I think, and made the stables 14 x 14. OH still hasnt fitted the auto water drinkers, dont get me started on that! They are gathering dust atm.

I am really not bothered about carrying buckets of water so not bothered about auto drinkers but i like the idea of those feed things that you can put feed in and horse can eat from (you know what i mean?) any one else have those?

I have windows that slide, one window/frame is fixed and the other half slides open. They are brill, giving you the option of having it open or closed with no fuss. One of the photos show the movebale window-frame behind the glass, you just move it across to close/open, great for cleaning all the bits of fluff out too

We have got an overhang, you can just see it in this -

It's enough to keep them dry but not enough to stand them outside tied up. Will you put pillars each end to give you extra depth?

Our boxes are 12 x 12 as they were bought secondhand and TBH are perfectly adequate except for mares and foals unless they are very young and small. You have to laugh, we saw these advertised in local ads, went to have a look for friend not us; they were at garden centre, fully lined but no central partitions (but there) and had never been used for a horse! We didn't measure them as they were told in advert, friend didn't want them, they virtually begged us to have them to move them; knockdown price, agreed, they dismantled and delivered a bit each night (one of the workers lived nearby

) all for £1500. Bless them, they numbered each piece and they went back up as easy as pie (still have the numbers on!

) BUT we were told they were 10 x 12 plus tackroom (36 x 12) we suddenly realised we had run out of concrete so there is an extra bit on the end now! Red faces all around

Wouldn't be without them at all and would probably get the same for them they are so well made, sadly we don't know who made them.
