Firstly sorry if I have mis-spelled stabiliser, it is one of those words for me...

I have a very old, heavy Rice Beaufort that I tow with an Isuzu Trooper, both the trailer and car are regularly serviced and in pretty good nick, the trailer has one of the old style couplings if that matters.

I've recently heard about stabilisers to make trailer towing safer and I want to purchase one for my trailer/car.

So... have you got any recommendations? Any problems with fitting? Any that won't fit an older trailer/car? Anything I need to be aware of?

Thanks!

They fit any combination. There are 2 types, one for fixed tow bars, one for removable.

I've only had a fixed tow bar one.

You fix a plate underneath your tow ball (you remove the ball, then put it back in with the plate between you car and the ball) and then another onto the A frame of your trailer (so whatever type of hitch your trailer has, has no bearing on whether the bar will be able to be fitted).

My brother is a mechanic, so did it for me... But if you're good at putting stuff togther it's not difficult!

I have a Bulldog one.

Yes, there are (as far as i know) two types. One that's got a bar that fixes to the towbar and hitch (sorry if I am using the wrong words not very mechanical and yes i passed my trailer test!lol) And one that grips the two bar.

Now, I am looking into these at this very moment- There is apparently one called al-ko stabiliser that isn't the bar one. This one apparently much better (and much more ££'s)

However, anyone who has the other one, i.e the long bar that attaches apparently you have to unlock to reverse and I have to reverse in some very awkward places what are they like? do you have to unlock them everytime you want to to reverse?

Also anyone have the alko 3004 or 2004 or 2000 stabiliser?? If so what it like?

Thanks.
x

Can't understand why someone would have told you that the ones that attach to the bars and not the hitch are worse? They do exactly the same thing. The point of the bar is that it doesn't allow the trailer to turn quickly compared to the car (very basic description).

I have had my Bulldog for 4 years (I think) and it has always done the job perfectly. It is quick and easy to attach/detach (not talking 1st installation)

You can reverse with them on. I generally take it off before I park it at home (when I unload the horse), but when I'm out and about I don't and it's fine.

Thanks for this information, I think I might go for the Bulldog one as the al-ko is very expensive. Because I am a wimp I will probably get it installed first by my mechanic type guy
