Stabling during the day

i have one stable between two horses, my tb comes in at night and my mare comes in during the day to get a break from the weather. she doesnt care that shes out over night aslong as she has food and a good rug, and shes a wooly bear! this way she gets the same amount of stabling and turnout as him.

We have some friends who do this as their stables are in a rural location with nobody on site. All was fine for a few years but suddenly they've become the target of thieves. They are concerned having the horses in at night with heaven knows who skulking around so are bringing them in during the day and putting them out at night.

In this weather (foul wind and rain) stabling during the day can be a snug option, so long as exercise is given. In the Summer, swapping to our at night and in during the day really can help ref the beating sun and horrid flies.

I do always worry about injuries over night, but being prey, horses should have pretty good night vision!

because 'day' is shorter than 'night'..i.e. I can have the horses in for 1/2 a day, say 4 hours, or all day, say 7.00 - 5.00 = 10 hours, whereas overnight is, well, overnight - in Winter say 5 - 7.00, 14 hours. so more to muck out, and longer for horses to get stiff, fed up etc.

my preference would be for 1/2 y - enough time for hay in peace, drying out feet, but not long enough to get stiff/bored.
