Just wondered if anyone had one and what their feelings were on the breed.

It's not the normal type of dog I'd go for but a 2 1/2 year old bitch needs rehoming near me - she's used to children but hasn't been around other dogs (apart from walks). Only being rehomed due to her owners having to move to a flat.

Will go and see her but just wondered whether they make good pets as i don't have much knoweldge of the breed (we always had great danes/manchester terriers/spaniels as a kid)

Thanks

big dogs in small bodies!

They are bundles of attitude, great fun always ready for a walk. Mine was great with my kids and very loving. She was a rehomed rescue who had been badly beaten.

thay make fantastic happy go lucky family pets, and generally have fab temperaments...the ones that do not tend to tolerate other dogs are those that have not been socialised, otherwise they are lovely, they need a firm hand and to be socialised from being puppies.
They ar enthusiastic dogs and can sometimes be a little over bearing, in their devotion, I have had a few black eyes from being nutted when bending down to stroke them.

I have a staff rescue in, he is one of the best behaved I have, and fab with the cats and dogs, but only because I was firm from the day he arrived, and did not let him get away with anything .

Missus...how many dogs u gonna research b4 u get a little doggi

I've got two of them at home atm (owned the breed for 20 years)...one a 15 month old rescue dog and one an 18 week old bitch from a top breeder. I live in a mad house lol!!!!! They live alongside my 2 cats without problems.

I love Staffords, and as long as they are socialised properly at a young age (older unsocialised staffs can be very bossy and take a bit of work - but its worthwhile!) and well trained they are the best, most loving dogs in the world! I work full time and I am happy to leave my two Staffies alone all day, they keep each other occupied when we are out, but are totally devoted to us when we are home.

They are sensitive and intelligent, they don't bark or yap (great!!!) and are good people persons - and really good with children. BUT...you need to make sure that you are boss, a Staffie who thinks he/she is in charge is a lot of dog to deal with

My dogs get a 1 hour walk at 6am and then a minimum 2hr trip to the yard at 7pm each night. They seem to cope well with this lifestyle and are happy and contented (maybe lazy) souls. They are sprawled out on the sofa snoring right now

I LOVE staffies, they are the most devoted of the terrier breeds and don't seem to have the same high prey drive that the other terrier breeds have...my cats are happy to live with staffords

They are the best dog to own IMO. They are fantastic with people, children especially (hence they are nick named Nanny Dogs) Depending on how they are brought up and socialised they can get on very well with other dogs. It is recommended that you do not keep two male staffys together though. Our 2 yr old staff is entire but he has been socialised with other dogs since he was a very young puppy. My mum has an entire boxer and they are the best of pals. We also have a cat which he lives alongside and will not go anywhere without him *rolls eyes* They can be stubborn dogs at times and are always full of energy but as long as they have enough excercise they are fine. For any info Id recommend Staffy Owners They will answer any questions you have about any aspect of the breed.

Personally I wouldn't touch a Staffy with a bargepole, especially one that hasn't been socialised properly. They need extensive socialising when young as they have a tendancy to be very nasty with other dogs. I've lost count of the number of run-ins we've had with Staffies, several of which were determined to rip my girl's throat out (and one of which nearly suceeded). They were bred as fighting dogs after all, nothing but a smaller Pitbull.

Well we're going to meet a little 2 1/2 year old Staffie today and take her for a walk etc. She's been well socailised and is great off the lead. Apparently she is a little nervy of bigger dogs (was attacked by a lurcher when a baby) and will roll over and play submissive until she knows she's not going to be eaten! fingers crossed

just lost my 12 yr old staffy - he was the best dog i have owned but i must admit he did need a lot of training in his 1st 2 years!! that done i couldn't fault him he was friendly with everybody and every thing - very faithfull and completely no trouble at all, i miss him terribly - now i have purchased a new one to start all over again!!

Oh - I assumed when you said:

that she hasn't been socialised.

Well I spent the whole afternoon with her and she is gorgeous! We took her out for a walk and she's such a good girl - waited for you to catch up and wouldn't cross the road unelss you said it was ok.

I know it sounds odd but the house didn't smell of dog and there were no visible signs of chewing or anything like that. Her owner described her as a lady and she was just that. We met another big staffie on the walk and because it was bigger than her she went straight into the submissive stance and rolled onto her back.

The owner went to pick up her daughter (as she wanted to emet me) and the whole time we were on our own she sat at my feet bless her.

So, dog and owner are coming our way on Sunday and we're giong to take her for a walk and show her our house etc...all being well, she should be with us on the 1st oct....keep everything crossed!

That's great news, she sounds a lovely dog.

My rescue Staffie hadn't been socialised at all, she wasn't even house trained at 1 year.

She learnt the rules very quickly and was at all times totally trustworthy with people (including babies) and all other dogs and cats (she did kill an escaped pet rabbit though!)

Totally well behaved off the lead, even when attacked by another dog - just cowered until we split them.

yes she did have big powerful jaws and when playing you could pick her up by a toy held in her jaws. Her favourite game was wrestling with us, she would NEVER EVER even think of being too rough. She was PTS aged nearly 16.
