how many of you feed stagbar or antler treats? and bones?

ive recently heard of a dental specialist advising these arent fed and you should only feed things you can mark with your thumbnail to avoid broken teeth

My JRT has been gnawing on a Stagbar for about an hour most night for the last year or so, no broken teeth yet!

Have heard of broken teeth on large weigh bearing bones.

I bought two stag bars for my greyhounds, and they couldn't make a dent in them, so gave up in the end. A waste of £16!

GREYHOUNDS MAKE GREAT PETS

We've fed bones, including the big ones, for years and no broken teeth, touch wood.
None of our dogs have ever dental treatment of any kind either, I wonder if that is a coincidence......

I guess as long as you get the correct size for your dog then there is not an issue--- Dex will go through a stag bar in 2 days if allowed- perfect sparkly teethies!

Ronniedog adores his Stag Bars. I get him either the small or medium size ones - he'll gnaw on them for hours and hours, but they still last him ages. Personally, I think they're good for his teeth.

I know not all dogs like them - and some go through them really quickly - but in Ronnie's case, they are an excellent, most favoured, high-value, healthy treat!

Bear is a hard chewer and demolished a stag bar very quickly then went off them and left the other. He likes his nylabones. He has lost a tooth but I don't think it broke, just disappeared! My three all have bones regularly, no issues so far.

I got Brochan an antler months ago and he's only chewed a tiny bit off it. Tried him with a bone at the beginning of the year, but it upset his stomach. The vet has since told us about all the damage bones can do, so he's never getting another one. I wouldn't recommend Nylabones either as I've heard a lot of bad things about them. Including this.

He's not much of a chewer, but it would be nice to find him something that he'll like, but won't harm him. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry but your vet is wrong- dogs are designed to eat bones!

Dogs don't eat as many raw bones as they used to.
Dogs are suffering more and more with dental hygeine problems.
Dogs need to go to vets for dental treatment.
(Some) vets say 'bones are baaad, stop feeding them, buy this speyshul Dentywotsit'

Dogs eat more dry food than they used to.
Dogs are suffering more and more with skin and other allergies, diabetes and other conditions that they never used to suffer from.
Dogs need to go to the vets for treatment for all these ailments.
(Some) vets say 'raw food is baaaad, here, buy this speyshul food instead'.

Anyone see an agenda or am I just being paranoid.

Look at their dentition FGS - and tell me if they were designed to eat biscuits.

ETS and yes, I do have one dog who cannot tolerate raw food (sad that he has evolved that way and that he is inbred on two dogs known to produce skin problems) so I am not a raw evangelist, I feed what suits the individual dogs and I still give him a bone every now and then.

Like alot. I don't feed the weight bearing bones of large animals due to the risk to teeth, but never had a tooth problem with any other bones.

My dog loves her Stagbar. There is an awful sound of crunching and I wonder if she is going to break a tooth, but so far, so good. It is getting eaten down, so obvioulsly not TOO hard.

I hear the thing about not giving them weight bearing bones as they are too hard, which is what you get if you ask for dog bones from the butcher. I am really pleased with the stag bar, as it doesn't smell, yet I prefer it to something like rawhire that has been "treated" with chemicals and comes from who knows where.

not give bones? bones are what keep their teeth clean. my old dogs who i lost at the ages of 13 and 14 didn't have a tartar/tart on their teeth and had bones regularly. I have a stagbar for tess which was a present and she has loved it. I have seem them priced at about £7 tho, is that right? x

TBH saying dogs shouldn't eat raw bones is a bit like saying horses shouldn't eat grass.

Yes SOME may have intolerances or sensitivities but generally, it's what they're designed to eat. Didn't the Queen Mum choke on a fish bone, but I bet she still ate fish afterwards!
