It’s fairly basic with a focus on safety. So need to be in control, be balanced and be aware of other riders. You might ride in open order so need to know to pass left to left. No expectation to work in a frame or improve the horse. Need to be able to adjust stirrups with feet in.

There's guidance on what to wear here: https://pathways.bhs.org.uk/resource-hub/forms-and-guidance/dress-guidance/

No expectation to wear a jacket, but long sleeves are required, so if someone wore e.g. a polo shirt, then this would be counted against them as it's seen as unsafe.

FWIW, people do often make up reasons why they failed something, when the reality is that maybe they made a silly mistake or were not up to scratch.

Stage 1 is w,t,c, and light seat in trot and canter, with basic pole work. Plus walk and trot without stirrups as a ride. You’ll be asked to circle then canter to back of the ride. There’s a great video here:

It’s about being safe ‘could this junior groom/apprentice ride a beginners riding school horse in an arena in their own without killing each other’. It is also about being ‘correct’ and safe - mounting properly, doing stirrups with feet in etc.

No you will not fail for being in a smart long sleeved top and practical coloured jods/breeches. Heck I did my 3 care all in navy & without a stock or anything beige in sight, the BHS has improved a bit ;)
